Topic: Hello everyone

i am the proud owner of my first VW motorcycle Trike. i have found the following engine number located on the motor and i was wondering id someone could help me figure out where it was made. i was told it is a 1971 motor out of a beetle. allot of the other parts on the motor are stamped made in Brazil.  The engine code that i have found below the generator mount is
AE066003 that is the full number. on the bottom side of the engine i have this number
111 101 102b     as41     if some one could please help me identify this motor it would be appreciated

Re: Hello everyone

Sounds like a '71 vintage engine, or the case is at least.  The AE indicates it started life as a 1600cc dual port in that time frame.  Hard to say what sort of displacement or internal parts it has now without disassembling it.

The other numbers are just part numbers for the case.

A lot of repair and replacement parts are made in Brazil (and Mexico and elsewhere!) so nothing unusual about the COO on those parts.

Re: Hello everyone

I have a '71 convertable I bought this summer but the engine # found below the generator starts with HO.The 111 in your
vin means type 1 ,and the year 1971.
According to the manual that should have been AE in the engine #

Re: Hello everyone

That wasn't his VIN number, it was the VW part number for the engine case (111 etc).

The H series was a 1500cc (single port) engine, and the second character being a 0 would indicate it's from '67 or '68, so your '71 likely had the wrong engine.

AE066003 actually looks like an early '72 engine.

Re: Hello everyone

I stand corrected Der Bugmieister I just got into this Bug  thing this year.I bought 71 convertable took the engine out after viewing many videos and I am taking it apart to change the flywheel end seal where there was a huge leak after my first familiarization test drive. The car did not run for years. So I put in points ,plugs, ignition coil , gas filter after clearing the blocked gas line of rusty muddy gunk, then i fired it up and went for a short ride .Came back after 2 mins. and she was LEAKING!At any rate taking the engine apart I noticed various nos. some are starting with 111 under the push rod tubes.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Hello everyone

Yep, you'll find similar numbers on just about every original VW part.  Some detailed information on deciphering the numbers is here:  http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resou … umbers.htm

When you have the flywheel off, don't forget to replace the little o-ring in the flywheel itself.  That one is often overlooked.
