Topic: think it might be the starter

Hi everybody smile 1970 beetle

Brand new battery, lights goes on when I turn the key, but the car does not start at all not even a sound. Its a new starter(mechanic says) had it replaces four months ago. I can running start the car and it doesnt take long to do so. Is there a way for me to get to the starter and have a look if a wire might of gone loose? Where on the car can I find the starter if I have to look for it?

Thank  you in advance!

James

Hi James, take a look under the car close to the right hand side wheel. It would be advantageous to jack the car up a bit.

Re: think it might be the starter

The wire from the ignition switch to the starter runs under the back seat where there is a connector that could be disconnected or dirty. You can try connecting this wire directly to the battery (+) and see if the starter cranks. Be sure car is in neutral.

Re: think it might be the starter

Thank you! I managed to check it out and it looks like there was a problem with the bush that run from the gear box to the starter. Now they have to open the engine but its a good things cause now I can fix my oil leak and replace my seals which cost me more than a pint a week.  The beetle is in for repairs and will up and running in a weeks time. Thank you for the advise I really think this is an amazing forum big_smile

Re: think it might be the starter

I have the same problem, Often when I turn key there is a 'click' that seems to come from the battery area/starter area of the car.  This is a 1970 bug.  Can you specify what that wire under the back seat looks like, maybe also where it is connected??  THere are several running to the little black box that may be a regulator or something, mounted under back seat on wall behind driver seat.  Many thanks.

Re: think it might be the starter

the wire going to the starter from the ignition switch should be on the drivers side under the seat, red or red/black stripe to single connecter. When you turn the key to start position there should voltage there. If not switch is probably bad. If voltage either starter is bad or you need a hard start relay installed.
The black box is the aftermarket  voltage regulator. OE Bosch is silver.
