Topic: Sometimes no starter action

Sometimes, all speedo lights working, I will turn key and nothing happens.  Then a little later, cranks right up.  Starter sounds strong.    I aint no Clancy, bless him, but can you tell me where to look under the car ( 1970 bug convert) for the lose wire that may be the problem.  Battery is new with tight cable.  Can i reach the starter terminals by just crawling under the car or is it really hard to get to?  Many thanks.

Re: Sometimes no starter action

could be the ignition switch. To check lift up back seat and find wire that goes to starter solenoid(get out your wiring diagram) while turning key check for at least 11.6 volts to that wire. if no voltage, switch. If you are getting voltage could be the starter or you might need a  hard start relay kit. Good luck
Yes the wires are accessible under the car also.

Re: Sometimes no starter action

Yes sometimes it can be the wires to the starter that are not tight enough, do you hear a click when you turn the key?

YES there is a click.......are you onto something?  Thanks a lot

Re: Sometimes no starter action

Firstly check if the wires to the starter are tight enough, to cancel out the thought of the ignition been shot unplug the ignition form the back part to where you put the key in, take a wire and put it between the terminals(make sure the car is in neutral) it should swing between two of those wires, if not then your ignition is probably ok,  If you get the click it means the brushes of the starter are probably worn.

It's easier to do these tests and more under the back seat as burrhead suggested. Start simple and clean the battery terminals and the negative connections to the body. Could be the problem especially if you are starting to get cold weather.

Then unplug the T1 connector on the drivers side floor under the back seat. The wire is red. When you turn the key to the start position you should get 12 volts at the wire to the front. Turn the key on and off a few times while watching the tester.

If you jump power from the battery to the wire going to the back, the starter should crank over. If you did want to add a hard start relay this is where you would insert it in the circuit.
