Topic: Stereo install 71 Beetle

I'm just wondering the best way to go about installing a stereo in my 71 Beetle. I made a custom panel to go in my glove compartment in my 64. No I never had any overheating issues with it and it was installed for about 4 years. I know most of the stereo's I've looked at are too big. Either too tall or too deep. I was thinking about designing a bracket for an under dash mount. Probably under the glove compartment to avoid interference with the shifter. Any ideas?

You pretty much mentioned the toughest part of installing a "modern" car stereo in an air-cooled VW...lack of space in the dash area.  A custom bracket of course helps a lot.  Then you have the issue with speakers...which again...usually requires some customizing.

Here's a stereo/glove compartment insert that looks interesting:

It will fit in the dash with a little enlargement of the hole.

Or this retro stereo will fit>

Also you can wire the stereo's switched wire to the ignition buzzer wire to create an accessory position so you can listen with the key off. Stereo will shut off when you remove the key from ignition.
