Topic: Severe Shaking

I was driving down the road and hit a small pothole going about 25mph and my 71 Super Beetle started shaking violently in the front end. I got it stopped, got out and did a quick check of the ball joints and tie rod ends, which look newer then 40 years old, and made it home safely.

I jacked up the old boy and shook the tires as hard as I could to check the stuff again and noticed that the bolt had come out of the steering damper. I bought a grade 8 bolt, nut and lock washer and put it back on (steering arm end) and it seems to drive fine except that I am a little weary about driving it now.

Could that have been the cause?

Also, I see bugs classified as type I-II and III what is a 71 Super Beetle?

Re: Severe Shaking

Welcome.
You're doing good if this is the first time you felt the super beetle shake. it is an inherent problem with them. yes the bolt being out is a cause of your problem. if it is OK now, drive it
Where is your location?
Bugs are usually classified as Type 1 both standard~ beam front suspension and supers~ strut suspension
Type 2 are buses
Type 3 are fastback, squarebacks and notchbacks
