Topic: Rad Fan

I have a 2002 vw jetta 1.8 turbo gas with a over heating problem. I have figured out that it was the rad fan not kicking in. I was wondering if I get a new fan online (just the fan no housing) would I be able to easily put the new fan back intot he old housing? or is it manufactured into the housing and not possible with out damage? I dont think its a soldered part?
Thanks

Re: Rad Fan

Are you sure it is not the fan switch? And yes you should be able to change the fan from the housing if you can find one. Housing should be bolted on to Radiator, IIRC

Re: Rad Fan

I think I can hear the fan switch click but the fans dont move...or can u even hear the fan switch?>lol  also how can I test the fan switch to see if its working?
Thanks

Re: Rad Fan

No you can't hear the fan switch open and close. It has been way to long since I have worked on water cooled wink Does the fan turn by hand, not froze up? I believe you can take the 2 wires off the switch and connect them, it acts the same as the switch closing completing the circuit. The fan should come on, if not make sure you have voltage at switch. All this with the key on. If the fan comes on the switch is bad. There probably is some values for the switch but I don't have a manual.

Re: Rad Fan

Usually you can unplug the connector to the fan with the car off, and carefully apply 12 volts to the leads going into the fan. If you have polarity reversed, it will just spin backwards without damaging anything. If the fan spins, then you most likely have a bad fan relay or fuse. The fan fuses are in a black box on top of the battery. The relay module looks like the one in the link below, but I'm not sure of it's location.

Re: Rad Fan

|Like everyone else has said I expect it to be your switchand they tend not to last long, What the guys are doing around here(South Africa) is too replace the switch with one from the peugeot , they look similiar but it seems the peugeot switch kicks in faster making sure your vehicle does not run too hot.
