Topic: complete brake job - cost?

I'll be trying to do a complete brake job on my bug in the near future, I have all the wrong shoes, and leaky wheel cylinders, I was wondering from the vet's here, how much time/ and mostly money, does it take some of you to do a brake job like that, where you're buying new parts. Is there a part list for something like this?

I'll be reading up on doing this repair for the next few days so I can actually build up the nerves to try it. I was just wondering what kind of financial burden this might be, before I even think about starting to buy the necessary tools/parts.

Go to:

...find the parts you will be needing or wishing to replace.  Total everything up...and you have your answer. smile

Sounds like you have along way to go if you don't even have the tools at this point.  You're going to need the:

- proper tools (including a jack, and jack stands)
- all the proper parts
- some sort of mechanical ability/automotive repair knowledge
- you better darn well get an air-cooled VW repair manual
- a lot of patience

We all had to start somewhere...just take it slow.

First thing to purchase is the Bug Me Video on brake maintenance. It will go through all the parts and variations on all the models, showing how to do everything. This is a great practical series for folk new (and not new) to working on Beetles. You can go direct to their website, or:
