Topic: 1969 Convertible V8 Beetle update with pics.....

I finally had some time to update my V8 Beetle website and give you all a quick update on what little progress I've made in the last few weeks.

I've been working on finishing the tear down on the 8.8” ford rear end I bought, cleaning it up, and getting it put back together again.  It is now under the beetle so I can roll it in and out of the garage again to work on it which is nice.

Below are a few pictures and a quick update on the progress I made, there are 27 new pictures on my website, http://www.v8beetleresource.com just check out the last two chassis pages in the construction section of the site.

When I got a little more time I started tearing down the 8.8" ford rear end again. Just pulled out the bolts that hold on the brake backing plates and axle flanges. You will also have to drill out two rivets to pull the backing plate off.

Now I'm just down to the axle tubes and bearings. I'll wait to replace the bearings untill I get the axle cleaned up and primed with some master series silver.

Just the 8.8" rear end and all the parts I pulled off of it.

I wanted to clean the rear end up before I primed it so I wire brushed all the heavy rust off, then scrubed it down with some dawn to get as much of the oil and grease off of it as possible and then I sand blasted it with my little sand blaster I used for the front of the frame earlier.   The rear end is now ready to be primed, and I also got my new brake calipers ready to prime and my brake rotors taped off to be painted with some high temp paint.

Here is the rear end with 2 coats of master series silver primer. It is amazing how much better it looks now. When I get the rear end of the chassis cleaned up and primed I will under coat the rest of the chassis and axle at the same time .

The calipers primed, I put 3 coats on these because I'll keep them silver, just to give a little contrast agains all the black.

I took the axle flanges, backing plates, and leaf spring plates to work,  Alcast Company http://www.alcastcompany.com, and put them in one of our steel shot blasters and got them all cleaned up. Here they are ready to be primed.

Here I'm priming all the smaller parts, sorry for the bad lighting....... You'll also see my pinion yoke flange. I didn't get the one off of the explorer with this rear end so I ordered one from dennys drive shafts. I was even able to get one for a 1350 series U joint to match my drive shaft.

Just the axle flanges after I primed them. Now I just got to get all this stuff put back together again!

Here I got the axle bearings and seals pressed in, and the axle flanges and backing plates bolted back on. You'll also noticed that all the hardware is new too. I just couldn't stand to put any old rusty bolts and nuts back on here. If you need just a few of several sizes of bolts check out www.boltsdepot.com Being that I only need 4 or 8 bolts and nuts here or there they were cheaper than getting a box of each bolt.

Here I got the emergency brakes back on. Most of these new parts are from www.rockauto.com by the way. At they time they were the cheapest on most everything. Buying some of the small stuff was actually cheaper to get from oreillys locally. I also like buying brake parts from oreillys because of the life time warranty. Just shop around a bit....

Next I put in the axles, then I taped off the E-brake pads, bearings, etc and sprayed a little black paint on the inside of the backing plates, I'll be undercoating the rest of the rear end latter on and didn't want the silver on the inside of the backing plates to stick out. (sorry forgot to get pictures). Then I got my new rotors put on, which I got from oreillys locally.

Then I got my brake pads put in the new calipers and the calipers put on with new hardware.

At that point I was ready to put some wheels and tires on the rear end and get it under the beetle. I picked up a pair or rims with lt285/75r15 tires on them on craigslist for $40.00. I was planning on putting 29" tires on the back end of the beetle but these are 31.8" tall and about an inch wider too.
The tires actually fit in the wheel wells, but are bigger than I'm wanting, but I was wanting to go smaller with the front tires and with these tires and the taller front tires the car has the same stance it would with the sizes I wanted. So for now I'll use these tires to mock things up.

Right now the axle is just under there temperarly. the mounting pads area actually further apart than the s10 mounting pads were. I've seen some people just let the leaf springs bow out a bit, and elongate the holes in the mounting pads to line up. I'm not a big fan of either of those, and I will already have to make some angled blocks to get my pinion angle correct so I'll just make the angled blocks with ofset centering holes so everything lines up nicely. I'm not sure if I will mill them out of steel, or cast some out of aluminum at work and heat treat them, etc............

That is it for now, I have a week off in a couple weeks, so hopefully I'll make some more progress then!
