Topic: Buying a 67 'vert? differences?

I'm new to bugs completely. and am looking at some bugs in my area, just to test the waters, I was wondering if convertible bugs have any special quarks that need be addressed, over other models.

I was also wondering what a realistic top for a 67 vert would cost to get replaced, and how to properly check for rust in heater channels, and other critical structure spots.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, i've been cruising around this site and others looking for as much info as possible. I'm taking a look at the car tomorrow, and want to be as ready as possibe. Thanks guys!

Re: Buying a 67 'vert? differences?

'67 Vert, I'm already drooling! Check  the reinforcement rails that weld underneath the channels~On my 65' vert, the previous owner welded the body to the chassis {for structure} to avoid work!  As to the top, I believe Karmann company is now re-furbishing Beetle tops, you just send them your mess and they re-do the whole thing! Have no idea what the charge is, though. I hope you buy that bug, 67's are wonderful one year only bugs, and a 'vert is just the icing on the cake! A gorgeous car! Good luck, ~~ Todd

Re: Buying a 67 'vert? differences?

Thanks for the help

I'm pretty excited, Took a little spin in it today and it sounds great, feels good, and looks pretty decent. Only problems were both brake lights did not work, (seems to be easy fix, if switches are bad/connections), not original paint, and the only main rust was under the rear seat. Engine had also been increased to 1600cc, and as i mentioned before the top need replacing. Other small cosmetic things like the smokers windows latches, and speedometer acting funny.

Seems like a strong runner, any of these things sound problematic? If not, I think I'll pick it up this weekend for 4600.

Sounds good, probably just the brake switch at the master cylinder, no..nothing sounds like a deal killer, once you iron out everything, it will be a reliable little driver! Does the decklid have the 2 vents in it? Back seat rust..is it at the corners where the heat exits from under the body?

Re: Buying a 67 'vert? differences?

Not exactly sure what you mean...there's no major rust in the rear at the corners near the floor, or where the heater boxes (which were rusty) exit through into the cabin to provide heat,  Just the very back corner on top where the seat meets with the vert top. maybe 1/4" hole was the largest rust spot. But still very flaky. a look underneath the vehicle showed minimal rust, but no holes.

It does have those two stylized grills in the front, ahead of the wheel wells, to let air pass under the car i assume? classic looking.

O.K...I meant the engine lid for the vents, what I'm getting at is that particular {decklid}, if its the correct one, is extremely valuable and rare! She sounds pretty solid! Any chance for a picture?

That's a late 65/early 66 lid

Sorry again! I am wrong. It looks LIKE that lid, two slits, but smooth back. So many subtle things to me, that i'm sure arent that subtle to you guys!

second try, http://static.skynetblogs.be/media/34139/dyn008_original_640_382_pjpeg__84d42a7634dc66c7e0ae419c39a51d7c.jpg

Re: Buying a 67 'vert? differences?

Yes, that looks like the right '67 lid for that car.

Notice the differences between the two - "T" handle was dropped in late '65 in favour of the pushbutton.  The bottom of the older lid is pointier, and there is a ridge between the two sets of vents.

'68 and up decklids look more like the '67 but are a bit stubbier and the bottom is wider.

Welcome to Volkswebbin!

Can you get a pic of the car and it's engine? Do you have a Haynes and/or Bentley manual?

The brake lights could just be bad connections. If this car is pretty original it will have many corroded connections and some brittle spade connectors. It's all pretty old after all. Here is a website that is the best for VW electrical problems>

Re: Buying a 67 'vert? differences?

What is the difference between the long block and the regular /common block ?

Re: Buying a 67 'vert? differences?

The terms short block and long block refer to a partial engine or whole engine.
