Topic: Sudden autostick failure

Hello,

I have a 71 Super, and the autostick suddenly refuses to engage.  I just got this car and and still learning about the transmission.  Can anybody hazard a guess as to why the sudden failure?  It grinds when you attempt to engage Low.  I'm thinking it has to be electrical due to the black and white nature of it.

Thanks,

JM

Re: Sudden autostick failure

check for vacuum leaks at the can under the rear fender, hoses, and the can on top of the transmission, and report back.

Re: Sudden autostick failure

Thanks for the help.  I have the VW manual, and between that and some experimentation, I was able to take it for a ride today. I had noticed that the servo would be in disengaged position with the motor off, and it would go back to engaged with the motor on. I eventually pulled one of the wires from the CV out of desperation to see if that had any effect. It sort of "reset" things, and the clutch was disengaged when the motor ran. I was then able to shift, but the clutch would not engage again until I fiddled with the contact on the selector knob by tightening it down more. Then it engaged rather suddenly. I think I'm out of the woods, but a lot of adjusting needs to be done. I cannot find reverse or low or get them to work. The shifter has a ton of slop in it, because I don't think the mounting bolts have ever been tightened. Most of the vacuum connections need hose clamps. One of the vacuum tubes to the carb (small upper one) has a lever in the middle of it to control flow. I'm guessing I'll leave it in, but it's plastic with flimsy ports. Regardless, the transmission worked rather well today considering.  I had a feeling it was an electrical problem, because the horn didn't work yesterday, but it does again.  Thanks again.

Re: Sudden autostick failure

In cars this old there will be many electrical issues. Many simply require a good contact cleaning or replacement of connectors.

You can fix them as they fail or go over the whole thing at once. It's not that hard.
