Re: Rust repair

Good work. I will be learning to weld soon. Hope I don't burn my car down.

How are your heat channels?

Re: Rust repair

The heater channels are good just two areas of rusts. They can be fixed by sheet metal from the local shop. Still i am looking for a donor cause of the stamping on the bottom. that's one of the area that will be replaced. If you want to learn to weld i recommend to use thin wires because they are more likely to not burn holes in your floor pan or other sections of your car. If you are lucky one of your friends could teach you to weld.

Re: Rust repair

Lol i will get the pic of me soon. wink Update. I focused on the donor rear luggage to drill/grind the spot welds to prep it for my 69 and my 74. Yes this will have enough metal to fix both of my car. I have done one side so far and need to do the other side.

The top will go in the 69 and the bottom will go on the 74.

drilled out the welds and took off the vents. Did a little sanding to take off the green paints.

Re: Rust repair

Been a while since i gave an update... I got this from the junkyard for free to convert the diagonistic port stamping to regular stamping to match original.
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/792908.jpg
I also bought thinner wires for welding. I was using .035 which is too thick so i went with .023 which should be better so i will give you all updates on how that goes.

Re: Rust repair

How long do you estimate before you get this done?  Keep up the good work and pics.
It is a learning experience.

Re: Rust repair

Re: Rust repair

Alright more update. I focused on the donor by cutting up the stampings that are not the same and convert to regular stamping.

That's all i have folks but i will weld them on soon. Also i got some rust preventive paint. (rustbullet) I have tried POR 15 and hated it so i will try this brand to see what happens.

Re: Rust repair

update. I did alot of trimming and fabricating with the metal to fit in the area i cut out.
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/795726.jpg
did some welding but this time i wanted to try a .023 wire so i did. I adjusted and see what range is best. First i welded few beads but they fell off so i had to turn the volt up more. Again i welded and it was alot better.

With the .023 wire it made a huge difference cause last time i was using .035 wire and it was too thick... Thats all i have for now but i will fill in those three holes i cut out.

Re: Rust repair

Sorry for no update for a while... Been busy with work and school and being a newlywed.... Anyways update so far. I worked on the floor pan and painted the section with rustbullet. Much better and worked on the rear luggage and welded on the metals and just need to grind off the welds to make it smooth. Pics!
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/808779.jpg
sanded it to prep for paint
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/808780.jpg
painted it with silver rustbullet two coats
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/808778.jpg
painted it black and sealed it. Still need to paint the sealer then i am done.
I dont have the pics of the updates with rear luggage but i will post them up soon.
