Topic: air deflector

Hi Folks. A while ago I posted a question on subject. I found the answer to my question and neglected to pass it along - sorry.

Burrhead had it right but, to further explain: the air deflectors are att. behind cyls. 2 & 4 between the top & bottom and bottom tin sections. They have welded nuts and the screws\bolts go down thru the holes on the front end of the top tin. They are not identical in shape. My car only had the 'left' side - behind cyl. #4. I purchased the right side deflector and will install it soon.  I have rarely, if ever, seen them installed on the few engines that I have inspected closely in that area. I assume, since VW designed them to be installed, that they are important in controlling the direction and velocity of air flow to allow proper cooling. Any comments? Thanks. Ken

Re: air deflector

Hi Ken~ I can't imagine the amount of money VW must've spent perfecting the engine airflow for our little cars..my philosophy is if VW engineers want a part on the car, so do I!!~~ Todd

Re: air deflector

Those rear deflectors direct the flow more closely around the cylinders. If missing, then more of the air just flows out the back instead of wrapping around the fins like it should.
I agree with Ken that the parts are there for a reason. The flow is not quite perfect, (a bit more air to the front side of cyl head 1 and 3 would have been nice), but it works much better when all the parts are there wink
