If you are leaking enough vacuum, it's just not going to go into gear, period. The original hose was wire reinforced, and it can be hard to find as a VW component. However, there are several options available that are not VW specific. Try looking at Grainger, McMaster Carr, and other industrial supply places. Plain old hydraulic hose will work, it's pressure rated but also tends not to collapse under vacuum. There are (or at least used to be) a couple guys around here that were great sources of Autostick info, maybe one of them will chime in. I only had one for a short while, and am no guru. You might also want to do a search for the Autostick Registry, different site than this but it's AS specific and I have to assume that the people posting there know a thing or two.
Off the top of my head, I'd say fix your vacuum leaks, make sure the contact in your shifter is working and adjusted properly, make sure the clutch diaphragm is in good shape, the shift arm is adjusted properly, and that the solenoid valve on the firewall is clean and able to move freely when you touch the shifter. What kind of symptoms are you experiencing? Does it slam into gear, not go at all, does the shifter move freely, etc...
