Topic: Pertronix Ignitor

I have a '74 Standard with the Petroniz Ignitor module. I don't understand it. I understand points, dwell, igntion, caps, plugs and wires but I simply don't know how the little black Ignitor module works. Could someone fill me in as to how this thing functions? More specifically, how does it affect timing? DO you still have to adjust the timing??? Motor is 1600dp, AH099226. The reason I'm asking is that my distributor cap is showing burn/melt marks on the phenolic well past the terminals for the plug wires, but the car runs ok.

Thanks in advance for any schooling anyone can provide.

Steve

Re: Pertronix Ignitor

The Petronics ignition module replaces the breaker points, and uses a magnetic sensor to control the module. Basically, the module imitates the open/close cycle of the points electronically, so that there are no moving parts. The primary advantage is that the dwell is optimized, giving you more consistent coil firing, and iginition timing is more stable at higher RPM's. Downside of couse is that if it dies, you have to replace it. No cleaning with a pocket knife or replacing with another set of points for a few bucks. Keep what you need to swich it back to points on the road, or get a spare module. You probably will never need them, but you won't get a warning when it does go.

PS: The rest of the sytem still operates the same, so if your cap and rotor are showing wear, then clean or replace them.
