Topic: timing

How do you know where #1 plug wire should be on the distributor if there is no cut on the rim of the distributor. Also how do you static time so you can get the car started then use a timing light. This is a 73 auto stick beetle, 1600 dual port. I had it runnjing & then I turned the dist. a slight bit to try & adjust the timing that way, now it will not start.

Re: timing

Ok we will need to know what kind of distributor do u have?

Re: timing

Turn the engine over till both #1 valves care open. Then look to see where the rotor is. That is #1. Usually 1  or 4PM depending on which dist.
Once you find #1 set the pulley to your timing mark. loosen up the dist and turn till the points for # 1 just open. That will get you in the ball park.
Nick, depends on what type of dist in the car wink

The photos I linked were mostly to illustrate the firing order & cylinder locations (a picture is worth a 1000 words). wink

You're right...depending on the distributer & where the "vacuum can" is located...will effect exactly where #1 wire is found.

Re: timing

If u have a stock distributor then it should be like the pic above. If u have 009 distributor then it should be 90 degree different.
