Topic: air deflector

Hi all. I'm about ready to install the rebuilt engine in my '66 Std. beetle. Can't remember where this part goes! It's called:SMALL AIR DEFLECTOR ENGINE TIN LEFT and has a p/n of:131-119-357. Inside the fan shroud??? Thanks. Ken

Re: air deflector

A picture would be of indescribably help here, or failing that, some dimensions and description of general shape.

Re: air deflector

Yes...like Der Bugmeister mentioned...a photo would be really helpful...or a link to a photo of the part in question.

Thanks,

Re: air deflector

I would say the air deflector goes under the cylinders above the push rod tubes. Very important piece.

That was my initial thought, burr, but notice the description indicates "LEFT"?  The ones you're thinking of are identical for both sides, so most likely wouldn't have different descriptions.  I'm thinking it might be the part that bolts to the back of the cylinder tin on each side.

That would be about 6" long, 2" high, with a 1/2" flange along the length incorporating a couple welded nuts.

Re: air deflector

Hi. Thanks again for your help guys. Yes, the deflectors Burrhead mentions are in there. Actually, the engine rebuilder left them out but, I was able to snake a 1/8-inck threaded rod down between between the heads and, with small nuts and washers, properly align and attach those deflectors. This 'deflector' looks totally different. I've looked at some engine tin diagrams but,  it 's not clear to me where these deflectors attach. There's also supposed to be a 'right side deflector' which was not on the engine when diassembled. Yes, a picture would be the thing. However, I can seem to figger out how to do that! A heads up on att. pics would be helpfull. Thanks again. Ken

Re: air deflector

OK, 2nd guess (to lazy to look in my parts book) the 2 pieces that go under the cylinder tin where the pre heat elbow goes (2 on 67 model). These are definitely left and right.
There is a sticky on posting pics in the general section.

Re: air deflector

I'm with Bugmeister above. (preface, I also didn't look up the part number) but i'm betting that what you are asking about is one of the oddly shaped pieces that goes at the front of the engine (front is front of the car) and is attached to the underside front lip of each piece of cylinder head tin, behind and below the fan shroud when installed.  should be some welded nuts there for the usual tin screws, and slots in the head tin. Is there a  kind of rectangle shaped indent in this piece, and does it taper down thinner towards one end?

An internet link to a photo of the part you describe would work as well.

from parts book   131 119 357   tin, cylinder cover/heat deflector.

Does not go on the front of the engine but the back,as in rear of car, fastens underneath  the cylinder covers.
