Topic: Wiring to connect power to Sirius radio?

Got a Starmate 5 radio, I guess a 14 year old wrote the instruction manual, he doesnt know of Neverland where there is not a bank of 12 volt plug-ins in my 1970 Bub dash.  So, I have this plug in at the end of the power wire which is like a phone charger plug in, but nowhere to plug it in.  Do I cut the wire (Reeeaal skinny) and probably find two wires in there, and where is the ideal spot to connect each wire, I guess it will be a negative wire and a positive wire.   Or, is the 'negative' really sposed to go to a ground?   Many thanks

Hi there,

I'm not sure if they'd have it, but you might take the radio to Radio Shack and see if they have a matching connector that you could hard wire to your Bug and then plug the radio into that. Should you discover any issues with the radio, it would be pretty hard to exchange/return it if the power cord was cut. As far as an ideal connection, I'd run a seperate (+) wire from the battery to the radio, and then ground the (-) .  Good luck!

Definitely want to proceed with caution - if you don't know which of the wires is power and which is ground, you could fry your electronics and your warranty.

Re: Wiring to connect power to Sirius radio?

Don't cut the wires on the plug. The plug probably has a built in transformer which drops 12vdc down to ~3.6vdc. If you cut the plug and wire the radio directly into your electrical system, the radio will probably fry due to the high voltage.

Re: Wiring to connect power to Sirius radio?

The best idea would be to try to find a connector to plug into the wire coming from the radio.  It will probably have the correct color wires to show the connection.  Red + and black -  The manual that came with the radio will probably give some info as to where it might be available, but probably a good place to start would be a dealer that carries that particular brand.

Check here, this might be what you need to complete the installation.

There should be 2 power wires, red and yellow, and a ground, black. One power wire needs to be always hot and the other has to be switched. VW's lack an accessory position in the ignition switch but you can use the buzzer wire from the ignition with a relay to create an accessory position.
