Topic: Replaced main filler hose
Finally got rid of the last three pieces of old fuel system hose this weekend. Main filler hose arrived at my local VW shop, and I replaced the vent hose next to it, and the main line from the tank to the metal line in the tunnel. The new vent hose did not fit (too small), so I had to use 1/2 inch ID heater hose. That will be temporary since it is not fuel rated. Pulling the filler hose off, I found the source of my vapor leak. Looks like a piece of bicycle inner tube which may have been used in an emergency repair, along with some RTV. The filler hose was installed over the piece of rubber, which split and prevented a good seal. Because of the ocassional vapor leak, I never filled the car up until the new hoses were in place. I filled it most of the way up and did a test drive, then topped it off. After almost 200 miles, the only smell in the trunk is the scent of fresh rubber and new carpet ![]()
It also makes it easier to track mileage when you can fill it up for real. I drove it fairly hard and had a few full-throttle runs, and was not shy about the revs either. Still got 29.8mpg.
Hoses off. Note the original paint on the painted pipe and on the trunk floor
All set to go!
