Topic: Paint metal behind fake woodgrain ?

I just took out the entire dash on my convertible 1968 karmann ghia and I will need to replace that fake woodgrain plastic sheet.  Now, it almost looks like I can get away with having the dash front painted the car colour (no wood grain insert) and then just popping the guages right back in like that. Then putting ONLY the top vynal dash pad back on (no bottom pad)

Any idea how that will look? Anybody done that before?  Got any pics of what it would look like?

Thanks again!

Not sure about the 68, but the 70 Ghia has holes all over the place in the metal. If yours is the same, you will need to weld in metal to fill the holes and grind them smooth before painting.

Re: Paint metal behind fake woodgrain ?

yes lots of holes in a '68 ghia dash. we have one in the shop right now, we contemplated painting the dash also, but it's a lot of work to do it well. if you're doing it all yourself it's totally do-able, but it will be many many hours to get it to look like it was meant to be a painted dash rather than a covered one. the wood grain dash cover is available as a reproduction part from karmann ghia parts & resto.

Hmm well I will me putting the top pad back on so that only leaves a couple holes to fill.  I will have to try my hand at some mig welding

I saw the plastic wood grain for sale, but It won't go with my paint and interior collies

Thanks
