Topic: Extra long shakedown run

It was a nice day, so I took the Ghia for a few errands, and just kept driving until I got to Bridgeport Michigan. I'm happy to report no problems of any type. It did run a little warmer than I llike, but then, it was about 90 degrees F and traffic was heavy. I should have brought my scoop! This also gave me a chance to check gas mileage, which at 70 to 80mph worked out to 33.4Mpg.

Very nice gas mileage!!!  What's your engine setup again (size, carb., distributer)?

33.4mpg is pretty darn nice!  Maybe Ghia's are more aerodynamic than Beetles! wink

I got close to 35mpg on a fuel injected Squareback on a trip from Georgia to Pennsylvania one time.

Re: Extra long shakedown run

Lets see that would be about 96.7 miles. Should have went to Frankenmuth to see Christmas and have a chicken dinner for about the same distance.
Great MPG
I did a short drive once to break in an engine and ended up going over 1200 miles and thru 4 states once, go  figure

I figure you had the map upside down.......

Yeah but it had pretty pictures to look at.
imagine jim memorizes the wiring diagrams and if it don't have pics I don't pic it up.
That is why the early wiring diagrams with the front and the back of the car including headlights, battery, dome light coil, etc are real easy for me to digest wink

Hey Nick, the engine somewhere between a 1600 and 1776. I did not pull a head to take measurements when I had the engine out; it was running well so I did not want to mess with it.

The setup for the trip was an aftermarket air filter (an even better one is now hidden in the stock air cleaner housing), the original Solex 34 PICT rebuilt with the accel pump modified and a hand drilled main jet sitting on an EMPI intake manifold with reground mounting flange. On the ignition side is a freshly overhauled DVDA dizzy with higher RPM mechanical points and modified mechanical advance, initial timing is set to around 14 degrees BTDC. Coil is a standard black one discharging through Bosch wires, cap, and rotor. Heads are thin-head VW/Audi dual port units with unknown valve sizes opened by aluminum pushrods, but stock rocker arms as far as I know (anyone know the dimensions for the different ratio arms?). Oil sump capacity is 4.5 quarts of Kendall 100% synthetic sucked in through a hand made oil pickup from the 1.5 quart add-on sump. Exhaust is slightly modified with wide mouth EMPI pipes replacing the peashooters (love the sound!).

PS: The Squareback is actually more aerodynamic then the Beetle. Seems the rear slope of the bug is too steep for the airflow to remain attached, so the flow delaminates and there's a lot of vortex drag behind it. The Ghia would benefit from an air splitter hidden behind/beneath the front bumper and a small lip on the engine cover, above the license plate light. Would not look pretty though unless you kept it small and blended it well...

Well my main purpose was to stop at the Black and Decker store in Birch Run. You see, they had this three speed version of the Dremel, with bits and clamps, for $21...

Actually, I did drive through town but did not have time for one of those feasts. Hot day driving a car with no AC while stuffed to the gills was not appealing at the moment. It did seem fitting to cross the wooden bridge and drive up main street in a German town though, lol. I stopped into a 7-11 to grab a slushie, and a guy came running in asking whose car it was, and on his heels was a woman asking the same question. The man was into cars and had several Studebakers. He was all excited and said I should buff the car out and it would make it look great, but when I was not as excited he said I probably was not a car guy. I told him I was, but was focusing on the mechanicals first and enjoying driving the car. Besides, paint and bodywork are not my talents... a door ding strikes more fear in my heart than pulling the engine. I did buy a bodyman's dolly kit with the hammers and such, and I do have an air gun for painting, but I just have to man up and find a good teacher. I did use the dolly kit and hammer out the nasty dings in the front fender where someone had dropped a heavy tool on the car, and it came out pretty good. You could see the dents from across the street, but now you have to look for them. I guess what puts me off is that the mechanical stuff comes so easy, almost second nature, but bodywork and painting just seems so hard in comparision. Anyway, sorry for the detour. The woman owned a red 64 Ghia, but did not drive it very much. I asked her why and she said she did not know. I should have given her my number in case she needed any help with the car.

Hmm, the Bavarian Inn would make a nice get together for an air cooled gathering.
