If I understand your question correctly (shift rod rotating)...under the rear seat there's an access cover on top of the "tunnel". When removed this gives you access to a "shift rod coupler" (image below). The hardware on the shift rod coupler may have come loose...allowing the shift rod to rotate.
It's also possible that your shift rod coupler is bad...and needs to be replaced. In that case, you would want one of these:

Hope this helps,

i have no rear seat, only a flat panel which i can still uncover as per your direction. it is funny, the work necessary just to stop the gear shift knob from turning in my hand. oh well...
many thanks, your help is very much appreciated.

Sorry...no rear seat...I was thinking Beetle. But same directions apply. Get access to that cover plate to inspect the shift rod coupler.

I MAY be wrong here but I think most or all of the VWs 68 and newer are MADE that way....Burr?

Lonnie,
Welcome to Volkswebbin.
On my '71 ghia and '69 bug both of the shifter shafts, the part that the shift knob attaches to, turn. In earlier bugs and maybe Ghias there was a pin that kept the rod from turning. I think Nick is misunderstanding your question and thinking that you are refering to the shift rod which is in the tunnel.
David
Yes, there is no pin to hold the knob and vertical shaft in position on the later cars, it's free to spin. For new owners it can be irritating, but you get used to it and learn to shift without twisting it. Mine has the "optional walnut shift knob" with the shift pattern insert, and it stays pretty straight now, but I still have to tweak it now and then ![]()
Most VW shops that sell air cooled parts will have the shifter available with the pin, but you will need to change your shift rod in the tunnel to match.
Paul
thanks much to all.
plantman you are correct, i am not referring to the shift rod but the shifter shaft (vertical) that altema mentions. i understand now this is the way it was made (to rotate) and will just get used to it. you all are terrific!!!

I certainly could have misunderstood what Lonnie was referring to. Was taking my best guess at the time. ![]()

Yes, you are correct Sir Yancey.........................................................(type 1 only tho)
I was wondering about you.
So does the ghia have a curved shifter? I never paid attention...

Mine is straight. It would really be weird of it was free to twist, yet curved.
On the other hand, that may be useful if you wanted to manuver your hand closer to your female passenger's leg...
