Topic: fresh air knobs how to remove

HI  I'm new to this forum I am helping my grandson restore a 69 beetle and we are removing the old dash and can't figure out how to get the fresh air knobs off . we have unbolted the gear assemble and can move it back and forth but the knobs seem to be connected by some  mechanile way we tried to pull them and that won't work and we don't want  to break the shaft

The Bentley advised way is to wrap some string around the base of the  knobs and pull them off. They are a tight fit on a square peg and come off hard. It might help to warm them up with a heat gun or hair dryer. Good luck
