Topic: Engine out for repairs

I will be taking my engine out to replace the throw out bearing, now being this could be a costly adventure, I'm looking for some insight as to what else I could do while the engine is out.  Things like replace the clutch, engine seal, etc.  There's 53,000 miles on the car and has never seen a winter & the only water it sees is when I wash it.  With all this in mind I know you guys won't fail me...      thank You    Cuse

You already mentioned a few good things to replace while the engine is out:

- throw-out bearing
- clutch
- engine seal (I'm assuming you mean the "rear main" seal)

I would also replace the:

- pressure plate
- transmission "nose cone seal" or also known as the "transmission input seal":

Good luck with the project smile ,

Thanks Nick, & my 72 super thanks you.  The engine seal I was talking about is the two part rubber seal that gets connected to the engine compartment, sort of the floor of the engine area.      Cuse

Thanks for clarifying!  Yupp...I'm very familiar with that engine seal.  So then add the rear-main seal on the engine as something to replace when the engine is out.

When I was younger (and didn't have as much "mechanic skill", tools, money, and no garage) to make sure my VW's were in top notch mechanical shape...I've had both the rear main seal & the transmission input shaft seals go bad (at separate times)...and what a mess that makes!!!  You lose almost 80%+ of your clutch friction...which makes it almost impossible to get up hills.

Good luck getting the engine out,

Re: Engine out for repairs

Don't forget you also have much better access to the engine compartment. I'd clean up all the tail light wiring connections and paint the engine compartment. Pull out the tar boards and look for rust. The tail light ground connections are behind the tar board and should definitely be cleaned up. A fiberglass pencil is great for cleaning male connectors and you can replace bad female terminals or soak the ends in vinegar to remove corrosion. Rinse with water after! Electrical spray cleaner is good.

Great suggestions Jim.  You sure do get easier access to everything you mentioned with the engine out! smile  It may extend the project a little bit...but in the end well worth it.
