Topic: 74 bug spark plug wire question

Can someone help me.  I bought replacement plug wires for my bug but noticed on my old ones that there is a wire tied into the number one plug wire that goes somewhere up into the passenger compartment.  Does anyone have any ideas?thanks

Just a guess...does this wire attached to one of the plug wires look like a "home-made" sort of connection?

If so...it may have been a wire that a previous owner ran to hook up to a tachometer.  Or maybe the tachometer is still in the vehicle.

Like I said...just a guess...since I can't see what you see. wink

Re: 74 bug spark plug wire question

If the connection is two exposed spade type connectors about 1/8" wide in line with a rigid plastic housing around the cable, this is a factory connector.

I'd have to do some digging to give you a definitive answer on it's purpose, but I suspect it's related to the diagnostic system installed in late models.

Yes it is the connection you described and it definately looks like a factory connection.

Re: 74 bug spark plug wire question

That would be the connection for the timing sensor. Line 54 in the diagram, connections 19 and 20. It's useless now.

Re: 74 bug spark plug wire question

My car is not a super beetle.  After further investigation the wire goes to a terminal block located on the firewall in the engine compartment that allows the connection of diagnostic equipment(I'm assuming). I'm not sure I can buy the plug wires that will fit so would it be ok to remove this connection from the system?

Re: 74 bug spark plug wire question

Like James said, its worthless now, just leave it off....

Like Yancey & James said...don't worry about it.  I can't remember the last time I saw or heard of someone having this "diagnostic" wire coming off of a spark plug wire.  This was probably common years & years ago when beetles were younger.  Owners have most definitely replaced their ignition wires numerous times...that this special ignition wire was probably never replaced (or even available).
