Re: 1970 beetle runs fine then suddenly dies

check for a clogged main jet...had a similiar problem with a 73 once, and the jet LOOKED fine, but it was varnished up, reducing the orifice. quick swipe with a pipe cleaner and the problem went away.

Since all of this is happening during the "warm-up" phase...it could be something to do with the choke adjustment...or a non-functioning choke.

Just to be sure...have you physically checked the choke element (the coiled bi-metallic strip) in each choke housing to make sure it's intact & not broken somewhere?  It is possible both choke elements could be bad.

If the choke elements are good...have you observed the choke element open as the engine warms up to make sure it's operating properly.

Is the choke properly adjusted?

Last question...When was the last time your beetle ran fine...and what has happened since then (did you adjust or replace anything, was it just sitting for a long time, etc.)?

Good luck,

Ok...thanks for the additional info.  And since you only got the beetle about a month ago...and it sounds like it really hasn't run well since you have had it...maybe we really need to start from the beginning to understand where things are.

I know that you mentioned that it has a new:

- coil
- condenser
- points
- cap
- rotor
- plugs
- generator
- voltage reg.
- battery

Is there anything else?

How about these items:

- fuel filter
- timing adjustment
- valve adjustment
- spark plug wires
- any carb. adjustments

Sounds like from what you said the choke is working ok.  It's always possible the fuel pump may not be working well (any leaks)?

Can you mention why you replaced the battery, generator, and voltage regulator?  I can imagine you had a charging problem...but just wanted to check to be sure.

Do you know if the beetle was driven regularly before you bought it...or was it sitting for a long time?  Like "JordanK" mentioned...your carb could be plugged up or gummed up with varnish if it was sitting for a long time.  It is also possible the carb. bowl floats could be bad (leaking).

Just a lot of thoughts to consider.  The more items we can eliminate...the more we can narrow things down to find the real problem.

Hope this helps,

Re: 1970 beetle runs fine then suddenly dies

Billy,
Other thoughts to add to what Nick and Jordan wrote.
Have you cleaned the gas tank and blown out the fuel lines? Better, since you have only had the car a months, is to replace all the fuel lines.
It sounds to me like a clogged fuel system, the sock in the gas tank, gunk in the hard or soft lines, dirty screen on the fuel pump or the screen in the carb.
My reasoning being that the car idles but dies when given gas, using up the fuel in the bowl faster than it is replenished.
Check the easy things first and these are fairly easy and should be done as part ot the New Owner Maintenance.
Good luck and keep us posted,
David

Re: 1970 beetle runs fine then suddenly dies

Had same thing happen drove me crazy.check your fuel pump they seem to go out slowly sometimes.your car is not getting any gas

Re: 1970 beetle runs fine then suddenly dies

I had a fuel pump fade out slowly and had similar symptoms but when cold or warm. The choke adjustment is important. Mine has to be adjusted seasonally.

Next time it won't start crank it with the pedal to the floor, no pumping!

Check your dwell too.

Do you have a repair manual?

Re: 1970 beetle runs fine then suddenly dies

well i found out to day that its deff a gas problem i can spray carb cleaner in it and it will keep runing the fuel pump is new and i just did a valve ajust and timing ....... the carb has just been by ear for now no gage are any thing the tank has been cleaned and lines blowed out right be for i got the car the car was an every day car...... and thinks for the info it means a lot u guys are great its the carb are the pump any one in ky have a tack and dwell gage sorry i suck at spelling .......?

Re: 1970 beetle runs fine then suddenly dies

oh well i have my filter betwen the pump and the carb and there is a lil air at the top of the filter should there be

Re: 1970 beetle runs fine then suddenly dies

To me it sounds like the needle valve in your carb is sticking.

Re: 1970 beetle runs fine then suddenly dies

needle valve woud be what the flote comes up on .....? and lets fuel in well its that are the pump i had a bright ideal to take the top part of the carb a part no gas in fuel bow ho much should be in there when trying to start

Re: 1970 beetle runs fine then suddenly dies

Hiya Bill,

You have no gas in the carb bowl?  Or just a very little?

Where was your float when you opened the carb up?  Up or down?

While it's possible that you have a sticky needle valve it sounds as if you really need (as per David's advice above) to give your fuel supply system (think tank, lines, pump, filter, and carb) a good cleaning/checkout.
