Topic: Can't drive in 4th gear

ok I have stock 72 sb but I have a 009 in it.New stock carb got it for xmas.Runs well but cant seem to wind it out.when I get to 4th gear it bogs out and then slowly will gain speed and go faster.Timing is right point gap is right.could it be the main jet is wrong? accelerator pump not working.also from a dead idle if you pull the carb all the way open with your finger real fast.it craps out and coughs.Tried to adjust carb helps but not really .Anyone have this problem lately and fixed it?
thanks James

Re: Can't drive in 4th gear

James,

Let me see if I understand...you got an engine with a 009 dizzy and a new carb.  Is the 009 new as well?

If the 009 isn't new...how did your engine run with the former carb. & 009 dizzy?

Re: Can't drive in 4th gear

Hiya James,

It would help to know what type of carb you ran (Solex, Bocar, or Brosol and model number such as 34PICT3) and what type of carb is new to your car.

Just from what you have written already I'd guess that you may have a Brosol or Bocar 34PICT3 on your hands.  If so, know this............these carburetors can usually be made to give satisfactory performance but they seldom perform adequately right outta the box.  At least, that has been my experience with more of these carbs than I'd care to count.  When I am in the position of having to use a new Bocar or Brosol I always disassemble it and clean it thoroughly.  These things must be put together in a mud hut.  Usually after the cleaning, reassembly, and a bunch of tweaking these carbs will do OK.

All in all, I'd much rather rebuild a Solex and go that route rather than any of the newer carbs.

Oh, and do know that any 34PICT3 is not an especially good playmate for a 009.

I've sure heard that a lot!

James,

Thanks for the additional info.  It definitely sounds like the new carb. is the main problem.  Like Bookwus asked...what carb (make & model) did you have before, and what make & model is the new carb.?

Thanks,

Re: Can't drive in 4th gear

Like the others I suspect the carb, which should be pulled apart, cleaned, and rebuilt. Kit costs about $14 US, and you need to fix the accelerator pump anyway. A clogged passage will lean out the mixture real quick and kill power.

Re: Can't drive in 4th gear

Also what do you mean by "timing is right"? Timing a 009 distributor is not done as in the manuals for the stock distributor.

Have you adjusted the valves? You can't adjust the carb until everything else is right. Carb is last.
