Topic: some vw people drive me insane...

Hey all. I gotta blow off some steam. I keep getting these wackos who reply to ads of mine. the other day, this dude sends me an email about my old '72 bug project, which I was selling for $700. So, he sends me this email (which is copy and pasted. this is how he sent it to me)

"nope its not worth that ,no market for that car anymore just scrap it for a hundred bucks and save everyone the hassle of restoring a car that is not worth restoring!!!"

And get this, the guys email is vwmania@hotmail.com. The guys email basically says hes a bug guy, yet he sent me this email saying to scrap it cuz its a piece of crap! Some vw guy, if he says it aint worth it.

Then again, prior to this, this guy named Matthiew Izzie, (mattierules@hotmail.com), kept harassing me to sell him this same car for $400, no matter how many times I told him no. so then, he emails me about another car I have up for sale, a '75 sunbug project i was selling for $3k. And again, he hassles me to sell it to him for $1000 with absolutely everything I have for it (almost 3K in parts alone), and just wouldnt leave me alone until I sent him a very strong worded letter.

Thanks for letting me rant about these guys, if you guys want to share some of those steam-let-offs, post 'em. I'd enjoy hearing them.

Re: some vw people drive me insane...

I've found that in the general population only a fraction of the people are worth knowing but amongst ACVW owners the fraction is much higher. Still there are plenty of idiots.

Re: some vw people drive me insane...

These guys are simply trying to "low-ball" you hoping that you are either:

- desperate for money
- just want to get rid of the stuff to make space
- or don't know the value of what you got

The more they argue with you...the more they actually want what you got to sell..but just don't want to pay a fair price for it.

They're operating on the principle that all you can do is say "no" to their low-ball offers...unfortunately it doesn't sound like they are letting it go at that...and keep e-mailing you.

I guess it's just one of the unfortunate downsides of doing business on the internet.

Re: some vw people drive me insane...

Its a niche market.  If one in ten seller's actually are desperate for money or don't know what they've got, then this tactic will work one out of ten times in favour of the cheap-ass buyers.  So they keep doing it.  All you can do is say "FIRM" and put your foot down.

On the other hand... I know of at least one local VW that's been for sale for 4 years on thesamba because he won't take cash and won't move on his price.

If you've got the place to store them and you aren't desperate, then hold on to it until you get what you want.  Just be sure that the perceived psychological value/worth that you have invested into the parts doesn't exceed the worth that the VW community would put on them, and you'll eventually find a happy buyer.

If this guy won't take cash...what does he want?  Cash has always been "King"...what does he want people to pay with gold, silver, diamonds, etc.? wink

Yeah. Luckily at the moment, I have space, so I aint dropping my '75. And yeah, if the guy isnt taking cash, how does he deal his transactions? that doesn't make sense. Guess some people really are nut-jobs in their own little world tongue

Re: some vw people drive me insane...

PayPal or certified cheque, I guess.

About 3 years ago I offered him his asking price but he declined the cash.  I don't know about some people...  Maybe he thought I was a scammer since I didn't low-ball him?!

This guy seems to be a bit unusual! wink

If somebody shows up at his place with cash & is ready to pay his asking price (if reasonable)...I'm not sure what the problem is.  Unless he thinks someone will pay him with counterfeit cash! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-confused004.gif

That's my problem. I have a basement full of Beetle and bus parts because I'd rather keep them as spares than get a small price for them. It takes a long, long time to sell stuff even at low prices. I can't even give away doors and glass and seats.

Yeah, same here.  They're all paid for, and then some, but I'm not about to give them away.  Hold onto them though...I'm starting to see requests for parts that used to be "throw away" bits when I parted a car out.  Nobody wanted them, and who ever thought there would be a demand for them.

Good parts get rarer & rarer all the time!  If you've got them & got a place to store them...keep 'em till you need 'em...or sell when the price is right! smile

Re: some vw people drive me insane...

Yeah. I scraped a couple of cars in past years, and there was very little I would actually send to the scrap. I would keep the roof clip, any usable parts and panels from either front or rear clip, and scrap only the stuff that is absolutely un-usable.
