Topic: Seriously considering selling my Mexi

Seriously considering selling my 99 Mexi.  The clutch just went out and it needs a tune up and possibly a valve job.

It's tires are about 3 years old with full size spare (it has a patch job), original VW hubcaps.  Exterior repainted 3 years ago.  Starts up everytime, no hesitation in cold weather.  Has a/c unit that needs belt and recharged.  The interior upholstery has a few stains, a nickle sized tear on the driver's side and a 3 inch area on the passengerside where the seaming is coming undone.  There is no rust that I am aware of.  Both floor pans were replaced about 3 years ago also and I moved to the desert about 2 years ago so she hasn't had much time to accumulate any body damage.

It has a clean Ohio title is registered as a 73 and about 53k miles.

Right now it is located in Las Vegas but I'm moving to Denver next Thursday.  The plan was to tow it to Denver with us and it was going to continue to be my daily driver until I could afford to get a second vehicle and give the bug a rest.

If there is no interest here in Vegas I will continue with the plan to tow to Denver and will just park it until I can fix her or find a buyer there.

Re: Seriously considering selling my Mexi

This would make a great daily driver for someone. The FI mexi engine has hydraulic lifters that don't need adjusting, solid electronic ignition with advance controlled by the ECU, 3/4" reach plugs (thicker heads) that last me over 25K between changes, and a factory fuel injection that is much less trouble than carbs. The Mexi AC works well even here in Texas, but the condensor mounts in the luggage area behind the rear seat - so you lose a bit of storage. The special parts are still easily available from Antono in Mexico City (he'll FedEx to your door), and we have good technical documentation collected for the systems. Darby is a good resource for help also, as he works on these.
Assuming it has th eoriginal trenny, it is swing axle (68 style), but uses the newer clutch with guide tube for the release bearing.
For comparison, my 2000 has close to 60K miles and everything is very solid.

Re: Seriously considering selling my Mexi

Are you selling just because of the clutch and valves? What do you mean the clutch "went out"? Have you done a compression test?

Re: Seriously considering selling my Mexi

Jim,
Because I'm moving to Colorado, the money I do have I need to obtain a more hard-winter friendly vehicle...you know, one that can defrost the windshield and has a few more safety feature than just seat belts.  So the situation is that if I can sell it and not have to tow it all the way to Colorado, great (well, bittersweet, they extra cash would be great but I really don't want to part with it).  But, if I don't find a buyer than that's just what I'll do, tow it to Colorado with me and park it until I can save up the money to fix it and enjoy it instead of relying on it as me and my fiance's sole mode of transportation.

I drive mine year round in Canada. If you add a gas heater you will have the fastest heating car in town and instant defrost. I'm good at -30'C.(-22'F)

Maybe you just need a new clutch cable.

Re: Seriously considering selling my Mexi

James, thanks for the cold weather tip : )

My fiance took a closer look at the situation and things it's not as bad as I originally thought.  We can still push the clutch pedal in and switch gears but when we try to give it gas it's not gripping.  We are set to leave for Colorado tomorrow or Friday.  He thinks once we have a few nice weather days he can fix it.

So maybe we don't need to sell after all.
