Topic: Beautiful day for driving

Clear, sunny, temps in the 60's. Oh, and what makes it even better? Paid the KG off. Got the title transferred, taxes paid, new plate and tag.
Drove my daughter to work and the car just seems SO happy. There was a line of cars to my right as the 1 mile sign for her exit came up, so I had to pass since no one was letting me in. Glanced down at the speedo, and it was pointing to the oil light. Oops!

Hmm, gen light would be about 105mph. Yeah, I'd do that, but not with a stock unbalanced crank! At least not for very long... lol.

Sean, I'd love to join you for some duneing, sounds like a blast!
It's cold there? Naaaah! It was in the 30's up north here. Drove the VW into work and was nice and toasty, but that half-mile walk from the parking garage nearly froze me! Our little guy was not going to sleep last night, so I took him for a midnight drive. We have a long park that follows a river and goes on for miles and miles, I was just enjoying being out and driving and did not notice him slip out of his seat. I turned on the lights under the dash, and he was curled up on the floor sleeping with his back against the heat vent.

No seat belt laws?

Yes, he was wearing his seatbelt, but slipped out of it on purpose and curled up on the floor. The road we were driving was an almost deserted two lane that winds along the flood plain for the river. No street lights and intersections are rare so it's pretty dark. What I did the following night was turn the rear heat on full, so he climbed in back. No seat belt there, but at least if there was a crash, his face would hit the seat back instead of the metal dashboard...

YEAH!! That's it. But how do we know you hit that while driving? LOL
How did the ghia feel at that speed? I hope you had your seat belt on. Was this on the express lanes into downtown Detroit?

My daughter was with me and it was a highway out in the boonies. Sadly, you could easily do it on the express lanes into Detroit because the police force is cut back so far that they can't patrol them anymore. I always wear my seatbelt, even when moving the car in a parkng lot. It's a leftover habit from my racing days and I just feel un-natural with the car moving and no belt. The Ghia has aftermarket 3 point belts which were not even installed properly when we got the car, but it was one of the first things I fixed. As far as feel, the Ghia felt fine, almost casual about it despite the windows whistling like crazy. If I had the right gearing and it was legal, I would be comfortable at those speeds as long as traffic was light with perfect weather. Keep in mind that your protection consists of decorative bumpers, sheetmetal, a spare tire, and the gas tank! Still, the car felt very good, but I would only do it in a burst due to RPM's. Now, give me a counterbalanced crank, a tall ratio trans, and an autobahn...  wink

Re: Beautiful day for driving

What's the cut back got to do with speeding on the express lanes? I remember going back there to go to Henry Ford Museum and getting on the "express" lanes unbeknown to me, I thought I was going to die and this was back in the 80's. IIRC once you're on the express, no getting off till ? or maybe I just couldn't read the blurred exit signs, lol

Rotfl! Well those express lanes have been crazy for years, but now you don't even think about getting pulled over anymore. They split after US-24, and there is only one connecting ramp between the express and local lanes until you get to exit 74. Oh, and no exit from the express side to the Southfield freeway, which is the one you wanted for the Henry Ford Museum.
On my way home during the recent fire, I was actually looking for someone to pull me over and maybe get an escort. Nope. AVERAGED about 110mph in the PT and even took a turn-around at 40 and did not see any police for the entire trip.
