Topic: engine tear down - pulled out case stud

I'm tearing down another case and one of the 6 large case studs has come out with the nut rusted to the end of it.

After a quick look on Californica Import Parts, I was unable to find any replacement studs available.

I'd rather replace it than try to reuse it (the end is just ROTTEN to the bolt) but if replacements aren't available, I'm not sure what to do.

How often does it happen that one of those large studs comes out?   Any ideas?  Is it unsafe to try and grind the end of the stud off, and see if i can break the nut off?  (That way, I should still have just enough thread to sink a new nut on to...)

hey nick ,why don't you just grind through the sides of the nut to weaken it then pop it off
good luck

Re: engine tear down - pulled out case stud

Got a bucket full , rest I threw out <<< That often !! LMAO
On the bigg stud's you can just replace it if the case threads are good !
Depend's on what your buildin CCR wise Could go with case savers and smaller Dia. Cyl Stud's <<, These tend to expand and contract better than the larger stud's take Higher compression << With in reason better and come in 3 Different grade's ! Generally speakin ??
German , Brazillian , After Market Chromoly !
Ger's being the best at around 40 buck's a sett Braz. 30 Buck's or less And I wont use the Chromoly << 1000 reason's ??? etc.
I never re- use the smaller Dia Cyl. Stud's <<< torqueing stretches the thread's under the nut and they like to snapp off when re used !
Now on your larger stud's I re- use um if there in good shape just wire brush tape threads and paint flat black !!
Need to go over use of teflon tape !! <<< most say No << Theres reason's ??? But I still; use teflon tape on my Cyl. stud's !
On any case hole or aftermarket case savers that go all the way thru into the case use of teflon tape is necccessary just wrapp the thread's high so that no tape goes intoo the case interior !
One time deal <<<< Do not pull a taped Cyl stud out then re insert it It will push teflon tape intoo the case <<<<< Mean's absolutely have your chitt together or install Cyl. stud's before case is assembled , and I like to do a Cyl. head mock up !!
Often the cyl. stud will not be turned in deep enough to the case so when you go to assemble the heads and rockers the rocker will hitt the cyl. stud before tightening down !! <<< Common Find ! Especially on aftermarket cyl. stud's !
It is reccomended that Cyl. stud's be hand tightend only intoo the case !!
I use Yellow Gas fitting type like teflon tape ! I will double nut the stud and give them a slight tugg tight but not wrenched in tight <<< Can damage cyl. stud if bottomed out to tightly <<< Just a snug tugg tight !
Glue the Head nut's Washers with small dabb of aviation on final head torque !!
Save all old even the small cyl. stud's to make Case saver installer tool's !!
Case savers are loctited in !!Red!

Re: engine tear down - pulled out case stud

ground/split the nut off.  I ended up damaging the threads a bit when the last knock on the bolt went through and hit the stud itself.... hmm  Not proud of that, but .. live and learn.

I chased the threads for a while with some fine grit sand paper and a few files, and I'm able to thread a nut back on it without much fuss.
