Topic: Hydraulic Floor Jack - Who Makes A Reliable Unit?

Re: Hydraulic Floor Jack - Who Makes A Reliable Unit?

Should have read the reviews,no? sorry.
I have been using a jack from HF for 7 years now and another from the local tractor place for 5 years both made offshore. When they go bad just buy another.
You can spend the big bucks on a brand name but who knows where that is made?

I still use a real US made Craftsman floor jack I got in about 1974. Still going strong.

The jack was a surprise birthday present from my wife, she knew the Craftsman name and assumed it would be a good product. I think that's what makes me even angrier about the whole thing.

I use my neighbor's jack.

Also George a 1957 Sedan, not yet started with Resto.

Got a 3 ton from the local flaps, ATD brand (or perhaps ADT, can't remember. Same tool company that sells stuff in ever auto parts store in the world, mostly allen wrenches as far as I can tell) about 5-6 years ago and it's still working great. Sticker says made in USA, may or may not be true, but this thing is built HEAVY. About $250 I think. Love it.

Also have a HF "nascar style" aluminum 3 ton, with the single front roller, dual lift pistons, fancy little handles on the side of the body,  bla bla bla...works ok for the  money I guess, paid about $120. Have to fix the twist lock mechanism on the handle every now and then. Drifts pretty bad if left loaded overnight.   I use it for the lawnmower and whatnot. Don't really feel safe under it, blocks or not.

Have used a NAPA 3 ton on occasion, also a very heavy duty unit, and I'd recommend it as well as the ATD (or whatever) above.

i have a nice compact 2 ton floor jack from canadian tire almost 6 years now -love it
my wife picked it up on sale in a kit with 2 jackstands for like 59 bucks ,
she(jack) is not as wide as regular floor jacks thus making it not as stable, i realize this and take it into consideration every time i use it as in i always have a couple of blocks in place untill the jackstands will fit.

My HF jack came with an extra o-ring also.

I know when the traveling jack repair guy used to come around back when he hated off shore jacks because he couldn't get seals? Or maybe he didn't want to?
Some of the jacks have adjustments on them. I fixed a friends jack once by messing with the adjustment screws but as always, do at your own risk!

There is not to much that is made here in the USA with this global economy!

Of course don't even ask me where that "O-ring" is now...10 years later!!!http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-basic/lol.gif

Re: Hydraulic Floor Jack - Who Makes A Reliable Unit?

As it's broken as is, I don't think even I am capable of making it "more broken", so I'll tear into it this weekend and either applaud myself for fixing it or buy a new jack at HF. My local hardware store is already used to me coming in to look for elusive washers and such, so I'm sure they won't even bat an eye over an O ring. :-)

Just another thought.  Usually an o-ring has something to do with sealing the hydraulic fluid in the jack..and so with a bad o-ring I would think that there would be some sort of fluid leak.

I think you said that you had no fluid leak...so maybe it's not the o-ring.  But then again...maybe it's a very small leak.

Good luck figuring it out...let us know what it was,
