Topic: Picture Request

Hiya All,

I need a fairly well detailed picture of the gas tank, fuel filler hose, venting hosing, and expansion tank.  Basically, the rear quarter passenger side of the trunk.

I have what is proving to be quite a rare 1970 VW (at least for US export).  It has none of the M26 system either in the trunk or in the rear of the car.  And no, this is not the work of some misguided PO.  It's quite easy to tell the M26 was never instralled on this car.

In any event, I do need a pretty well detailed shot of how a 1970 gas tank/trunk was set-up to move loose hydrocarbons to the rear of the car.

Anybody out there in Volkswebbin'land have a 70 Bug they can shoot a picture of?

Re: Picture Request

This may help but I'm not sure which pic is '70 due to the site being German.

Re: Picture Request

Hiya James,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm pretty sure that diagram 28 is representative of the equipment on a 1970 Bug.  The problem is that, without a picture of the actual OEM set-up, it's hard to know where some of the parts go or what they might hook up to.  If I had a picture of the set-up to use in conjunction with the diagram I think I'd be in business.

Re: Picture Request

OK I have all the parts in that pic and I may have some pics of it in the car. I know where it all goes because I removed it. This setup uses a expansion chamber similar to a charcoal can attached to the right side in the trunk instead of the long plastic tube along under the windshield.

Re: Picture Request

Here is a pic of the expansion can. The bottom can is a charcoal can.

It went in the bracket on the right side of trunk seen in this pic.

Will you be needing all the parts?

Re: Picture Request

Hiya Jim,

Actually, this request for pictures is not for me.  I have no intentions of changing the emissions system in my car.

However, I recently received a request from a fellow who had read my procedure for refilling an emissions canister.  He wanted to know if I could help him with the emissions plumbing under the hood in his 70 Bug.  He had had the Bug restored by BFY down in LA.  Since the car had been finished he had noticed fuel odors coming from the front of the car.  In looking at his pictures it was obvious to me that BFY had used some "creative" license in connecting and routing the emissions hosing.  Unfortunately, I could not refer to my Bug for a correct 1970 hookup.  That was the reason for the picture request.  Although I have worked on Bugs with that system I could not recall exactly how the two tees and emissions hosing were hooked up in the area of the expansion chamber and the fuel inlet.

I managed to round up an ETKA diagram and several pictures of the system so that ought to help him undo and then redo his emissions plumbing.

Thanks for posting up the pictures.  Your help is appreciated.
