Topic: New guy on the block.

Just thought Id say hey.  Im new to all this forum stuff so bear with me as I will probably make a few mistakes. I am currently doing a pan off rebuild on a 1974 super beetle. This is my 3rd beetle but the first one Ive really torn into. Im gonna have lots of questions and probably have some dumb replies. As with alot of us my first car was a beetle, so ive been cursed with the little buggers ever since. Not trying to do a fully correct restoration to the car, Im just planning on building a nice clean driver.

Just think, What would life be like without all those bugs?

Wayner: Welcome to Volkswebbin! You'll have a lot of fun here.....and maybe even get a question answered!! Seriously, there's a great crowd around here. And your skin won't have to be as thick as with some of the other forums.

Re: New guy on the block.

Welcome to the 'hood, wayner.  Like Clancy said, this is a pretty laid back place most of the time...it's about the cars, not whether you know how to use the forum.

Don't be shy with the questions - there's a lot of good knowledge floating around here!

Re: New guy on the block.

Welcome Wayner,

Sounds like you have a heck of a project there...should be a lot of fun.

There are very few question's you can ask that can't be answered here when it comes to air-cooled VW's...and when you ask a question, it usually gets answered pretty quickly.

One suggestion (when you have a question), search the site first...many times your question may have already been answered previously.  But in any case...ask away.

Good luck with your project...and even if you don't have questions...you can post project updates & pictures for us to read & see.

Welcome! I'm a noob here myself, but like the others said, knowledge and answers abound here! Sounds like a great project you've got going, so feel free to post pics.

Re: New guy on the block.

Well here is a couple pics of my little project...

Here is the body off the pan only took me 2 weekends and no broken bolts...
and here is the chassis still waiting to get its pans replaced.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p174/wayner71/bugpics7-12-09004.jpg

Does anyone have any advice be it pro's and con's on a parts supplier or brand? Ive been surfing the net and im more confused now than when I started!!
The (expletive deleted) that started to replace the pans with the body still on really botched it up. I now will need to replace the entire pan half on both sides. Seeing how the whole car is built off the pan platform, I REALLY dont want to cheat anything here. Anything you guys can offer would be appreciated.

Just think, What would life be like without all those bugs?

Re: New guy on the block.

Welcome. Car looks pretty good. Are the heater channels intact?

Hope you braced the door opening well. I have a friend with a '67 who didn't and now his door doesn't shut. The body can twist once off the pan.

We love pics! Take lots. What motor do you have? Stock?

How's the wiring? I like electrical mysteries like some people like murder mysteries and these old VW's abound with electrical mysteries. Gas heater? Will you drive year round? Beetles are great in snow but you probably know that as you have had others, and if I know my geography, Indiana has snow.

Are there ever Beetles in wrecking yards near you?

I like CIP1 for parts but I don't have experience with others so I can't compare. CIP1 has branches in Canada and the US so I can avoid custom hassles, if any. They have been good though in all ways, returns etc.

This company has some hard to get stuff.

It will be hit and miss finding good parts. Nothing is as good as original. But some suppliers try harder than others to offer the "good" stuff.
I like  www.oeveedubs.com  or www.wolfsburgwest.com.
Pricey but usually worth it for fitment and quality.

Burr, is "fitment" a real word?

Re: New guy on the block.

Thanks for the advice, guess I just gotta jump in and get my feet wet.
As for the project its a 1974 super, completly stock with a dual port 1600. I bought the car off e-bay back in april. Its originally outta New Mexico and the body is as solid as the day it came off the show room floor. I can apply 215lbs of my lard butt on the door sills and bounce up an down with no flex of the body. I didnt want to start this type of build having to deal with any more rust than possible. I also have another 74 that  I got just for parts.
I definately wont be driving her in the winter, no fun scraping windows on both sides!     Been there...done that...

fitment, something adapted to a purpose; equipment;  outfit; the state or act of being fitted................................
..............................................................................................................................................................

In this case the fitment of said parts is on a 1974 Super Beetle, Sir.    Or as they say, now use your newly acquired word in a sentence. The fitment of some of these Chinese POS parts leave a lot to be desired. Sir

Yancey, sir, you really need to get out more often.

I sit with my dictionary next to me as a am reading multitudes of magazines and newspapers and whenever I find a word I am not familiar with out it comes.

A car from New Mexico is great, virtually rust free. Good start for a project.
