Topic: parts bus not so busted!

Well what a week. I have a '74 bus in need of much bodywork and a new motor as my 1.8L dual carb has way too much crank end play. So my friend and I bought a parts bus, a '78 FI Westy, so I could get the motor and he is missing some cabinets and the table from his Westy. We have bought and stripped a couple of buses now.

We get this one towed to my place and start going over it and too our surprise it's way more solid and original than either of our buses. So I guess I am keeping and restoring this '78 for me and he and I will split mt '74 between us. The plan now is to find another parts bus and restore the '74 later and sell it. First though we get both ours perfected. His is on the road and not bad but no heat and a Weber progressive. It's a Hi Top.

Here is my new project. Only thing messed with is the 2.0 FI motor which was replaced with a 1.8L in '95 but they retained the FI. It has sat since '98 and was driven one day in 2003 to move it across town. The rust is only in thin sheet metal along the rockers etc. Most can be repaired without buying custom panels. Battery tray is solid as is under the tail lights and the rear seat belt mounts. Front floor still mostly painted like new except near pedals. Dash is hacked for a stereo but I have a spare good one if it bothers me. Canvas is intact but showing it's age.

$500 Cnd. Guy thought it was unfixable. (his name is actually Guy)

Door track is not rusted, unlike my fiber glassed and foam filled '74

By far the worst rust spot.

I was looking forward to the BA6 gas heater in the '74 but I do have a BN4 to put in this bus. I don't imagine much heat gets up that long hose.

I drained the skanky gas and rinsed the tank, put some oil down the spark plug holes and charged up a battery. I plan to crank it over tomorrow, first by hand, then with the starter, without fuel or ignition, to build up oil pressure, then give it a go. Is there anything else I should do before starting it? After I confirm it runs the motor and tranny is coming out for renewing and POR15 underneath. No holes underneath!!

Dusty motor from sitting in the desert. No booster fan but I have 3 in my basement. I have so many parts from wrecks.

Hiya Jim,

I don't think you need me to tell you that you got a great deal there.  That Bus is looking a little disorganized and unloved but solid and pretty complete.  Nice purchase becomes nice project.  Sharp eye there Jim.

Not so much a good eye as good luck, unusual for me. I didn't really look it over other than the motor and cabinets because that's mostly what we wanted. I didn't crawl under as we don't need anything from underneath and there was no BA6 gas heater. It was in a field and in the desert the plants and insects aren't too friendly! Poisonous spiders, tics and rattlers. Thorns and prickly grass. And Grizzles but I have yet to find a Griz under a bus.

Looks like I need new rear axles. A boot on each side has been completely replaced with duct tape.

I cranked it over today first by hand then with the starter until the oil light went out. Not long. Now I'm off to my FLAPS to get a new gas filter so I can actually fire it up.

The fuel pump is hotwired to the coil so I will have to investigate the double relay for a problem. I have a spare relay. I must have a couple of buses and Beetles in my basement minus the body shells. Got a stack of doors and glass.

Anyone know who sells a new canvas top?

Re: parts bus not so busted!

Thanks Tom.

It started up and ran good. And without a gas pedal! Idled real nice. I'll swap in the gas pedal linkage from the '74 and take it for a spin to try the tranny etc. Brakes need to be pumped up and the reservoir is very low.

I guess after a short drive a compression check is in order. It will need a valve adjustment because the engine is not the original '78 with hydraulic lifters but a '74 longblock (CB) with the '78 FI.

Re: parts bus not so busted!

Turns out the engine is a '74 1.8 L. with the FI from '75' or '76.

My luck is holding. Drove around the block and it ran great, shifted good, a bit sloppy, and lots of power. Did a compression check, all 145 - 150.

Fixed the fuel pump problem. Bad ground at it's relay. 2 hours to figure that out!

Still plan to pull the engine but I guess I don't have to tear it apart. Change all the hoses and rubber bits, paint the tin and the engine compartment. Lots of fun!

Re: parts bus not so busted!

Sounds like you have a great find there! All the bus campers we had were homemade conversions, but were still fun. My brother and I would play chess laying on the bed on long trips. Glad we never crashed like that!
