Topic: Dished vs Flat cam gear.

So, I think I messed up.  I bought a new engle 110 cam, and an aluminum flat 3 bolt gear to mate with it.

Problem is, my previous cam was dished... is the old oil pump going to rub against the cam if its not dished??

help!

update:  i think i figured it out....   any opinions?

Re: Dished vs Flat cam gear.

Yes it will lock. You need an oil pump mated to cam gear type.

Re: Dished vs Flat cam gear.

Yeah you gotta runn right camm to the Pump or vice a versa  ! Other consideration's here are Pump Stud's and stud depth intoo the case /
Old cases the Stud hole's go all the way thru and newer case's they dont ! Add the different width of pump houseing's between the dished and the Flatt ??
Just kinda lettin you know what to expect ?? Before you slamm the 2 case halve's together ! Might be you need to change the Pump mounting stud's in the case also !
As to gear mounting on the Camm ? Speciallty shoulderd bolt's are used with the Teethed type lock washers <<< Right bolt's are essential here !! 10.8 type shoulderd bolt and red loctite !
The camm Timming Mark and slot and bolt need to line up when mounting the camm .
Also your gonna definately wanna Degree the Camm ! Camm Gear too camm Matte relationship is a source for tolerance stacking !!
Also Im not a real big fann of the Double thrust Cam bearing's ! I use them in some application's but for the most part have gotton away from the practice !
Idea being that once you get the Radiuse Pitch right and the Thrust set right and the Back lash all set in the Oil side of the Case ??
You then add another shell to the cover side ???
This can and will affect Back lash , and thrust !!
Im of the opinion that it is better to have these setting's correct than it is too beef the thrust up and affect them negatively !
Course enough time you could bolt together and tool up a dial indicator to check the setting's with cases bolted together etc.
I like a stock gear on my Camm's of the proper Pitch radiuse !
  I prefer the Flat camm due to extra Bolt >> 4 bolt's etc. V.S. 3 !
Check thrust surfaces of both Camm and Bearing's ! I tune with a file if neccessary !
I check Back lash and thrust in this Manner !
I install my Dizzy drive and distributor ! Sett my Crank TDC number 1 etc. Then install the Camm !
Now cause the dizzy and drive are allready installed I can turn the rotor of the Dizzy back and forth and it slides the crank back and forth !
So I will use the rotor to Mimic an Approximation of where the Crank would Ride in it's thrust travel .
Do this by twistin rotor until the crank slides all the way back in it's thrust travel ! Then turning the Dizzy rotor back too move the crank just a smidgen forward ! Mimic- ing a crank thrust setting ! Or close approximation of crank thrust setting ?
This is where you want to take your Camm back lash and thrust reading !
  Any question's post again !
P.S. dont get in a hurry ! Patience is Key here ! Play with it a while get comfy go the xtra to get it right !

P.S. Was botherin me all way up the Mountain and Back !
Often if I get a Tight Camm thrust dont be afraid to set the thrust shell on a peice of emery and do the Figure 8 .
Can take it down a Lil ?? Not a lott !
Now Im gonna be hung up on figure 8's all frikin day !! Wich is why I posted LMAO

Bett he's runnin around trying to figure out a Camm Gear ! I prefer stock gear's ! Least for a 1776 . If look's like a Neutral Pitch radiuse By all mean's use the split gear in a new gear !

Re: Dished vs Flat cam gear.

Like a router, depends on which pole you look from. The rest you can tell us. But figure this, you are stuck in a figure eight and you tell us which way you are going??  Cam gears, uh I leave to Tom the engine builder, he says yeah we'll use this one. I built one engine and that's enough, decided to leave to guys that know what they are doing. One thing for sure since this engine is broken in, it runs great.
