Sean: I got an Engel 110 and I ordered a new cam gear.  My old cam might have a little bit of life left on it (not much) but I'll hold onto it for a while.  My case savers all seem to be a few mm raised from the case.  I'm not sure about setting them further in.  The shop is already asking for a large sum of money just to bore the crank and cylinders...

Patty: sounds good smile

Leave the case savers alone and let the shop mill into them when they bore the case.  --Ryan

It's always nice to have the right tool for the job. Double Nut works great, unless the studs are really in there. Don't tweak the stud! If you can afford it, get one of these:

Bingo

I've got the same tool, works like a hot damn.  Don't think I've found the stud that can resist it.

Yeah Ryann's right on that !
Ideally I like a Lil recess to my case savers in a Perfect world ??
But they will deck intooo them a graze or two !
  As to $$$$$$$ ??
Decking is essential to the 90.5 !
Not for the reason's you would think !! Like Center Line etc.
But to give the Silicone more Meat to compress to and Adhere to so that you wont leak oil under the Cylinders where they Matte to the Case !
Go the Xtra $$$$ on Decking !!
As to Camm gear ! Usual here on new gear's is a Neutral Pitch Radiuse gear !
Look on the back of your camm gear for >>>> -1 or -2 or a -3 or a +1 or a +2 , +3, +4 , etc Will be stamped on the back radiuse of the camm gear !
If cant find nothin on your stock gear then it is a Neutral Pitch radiuse Gear ! << Mean's your new gear will be close !
But understand that Line Boreing will affect the Pitch radiuse of the Camm and crank gear mesh !
Not that bigg a deal ?
But to me a gear that doesnt clatter ?? I just prefer that 2 Part's meshing together smooothly is better than a new part that doesnt Mesh Smoothly !
  I think My way make's a better motor !
Call it self Phrophecy, Hopefull thinkin  ?? But no Clatter in Cam gear sure seem's to smooth up the Over all of a street motor ! Least in my Experience !
Quieter Cam crank gear mesh , Quieter Pump , Quieter Valve train over all !

Hey Nic--We're in town and I brought an old book called How to Hot Rod Volkswagen Engines by Bill Fisher for you to peruse .   Don't know if it's any good but maybe something to laugh at.
Has anyone else seen this book ?

It's one of the better books written.

Also George a 1957 Sedan, not yet started with Resto.

I've got a couple copies of it on my bookshelves.  A lot of good info in there, but bear in mind that it's now an older book.  Techniques and technologies have advanced since it was written, so don't take everything in there as being the final word.

Re: head stud removal @#@#%$!@#$%!!

I use it ! Got me 2 or 3 of um around here !! Same Book !
The Basic's are still the same !!
But like the Idiot Manual ??? Got some stuff in there that was inaccurate in it's Day as in Half Truth's ! This in turn lead to what is now considerd V.W. Gospel .
Example : They claim Prog's are Junk no sizeable Increase in HP ??
This is a half truth !!
Right Displacement with right manifold and you can get in excess of a 10% increase in HP more Likely the full 17% is there to be had as Advertised !
But you wont get that on a 1600cc with a Plenum Chamberd Manifold ?? Wich I beleive is what they used for testing !
Few minor discrepancy's ! But the Basic's are the same ! Good Book !
