Can anyone explain in a very simple manner (remember its ME asking) how an American car can have a brake light, tail lite, AND a turn signal ALL on a two element bulb. (ONE bulb per side of course).....I think Volkswagen used a system similar to this in the 50s....If I remember correctly the brake lites and the turn signals was on the same element.(MAYBE)

Let me have a go at it. On a car with turn/brake light combo,they share a common buss in the switch itself to activate one side or the other for the brake light. When you activate the turn switch it closes across the extra buss to deactivate that side brake light. If you have a 67 down bus wiring diagram or 61 down bug diagram,they had the same filament,I think you will see how it works. Or better yet if you have one of those turn switches lying around,dissect it and you will see firsthand.

Thank you Mr. Burrhead sir........it makes sense......There IS a converter box you can buy to allow a bug to use only a two element bulb to do the 3 functions I mentioned...I think its for wiring to a trailer...Thanks again !

Yes,Sir, They use a trailer"converter" box when using the small 39 Ford tail lights on the bugs.

I don't know how it works on all cars but some have computer operated led lights. The single light, single wire receives a pulsed signal many time per second that lights the led in pulses as required. You can see this effect on cars having this by sweeping your gaze past the light while it is lit. Instead of seeing a bright streak cross your field of vision you'll see a dotted streak. This is the light lighting on and off many times per second. This system works only on led light systems, not on incandescent lights.

Well mistake me if Im wrong on this ! But the Rubber seal's between Body and fenders on V.W's make it where there has to be 3 wires too a 2 element Bugg cause 1 is a ground wire !
On a Ford or Chevy the Bulb ground's via the Bulb houseing to the Bulb receptacle !!
