Re: 12 volt conversion – Wiper Motor Update
I just bought one too and have my spare SWF and the new Volvo unit side by side. Yup it looks liek the same thing, I have to move the stud and change the big shaft.
You can clearly see the Volvo unit is simply a grown up version of the old Vw unit though.
Re: 12 volt conversion – Wiper Motor Update
Darby: Yep. I even found a VW number on the Volvo unit. It was stamped in ink around the base of the unit and started with something like a 4xx-xxx-xxx. Evidently from a Type IV (411 or 412). It even has "Germany" embossed in the aluminum cover......Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

welcome to the wonderful world of 12volt , Clancy

What did you use for a Generator or Alternator?

Re: 12 volt conversion – Wiper Motor Update
Hank: I went with the Bosch Alternator. I purchased the kit from Mid America minus the alternator which thery were out of. I checked around here locally and one shop wanted $269 for the alternator. Instead, I found an advertiser on the Samba and they had the same alternator for about $170 shipped. I ended up using an original VW alternator stand I had in my "box-o-parts" instead of the "Empi" one that Mid America supplied. I've not heard much good about the Taiwanese stands. All in all I'm very pleased with the conversion. And thanks, again, for the tip about the Volvo motor!

Re: 12 volt conversion – Wiper Motor Update
You know Hank, now we recommended that to Clancy I remember he has a 65 not a '64. Do we tell him now that he could have bolted a complete late model 2 speed assy?
Clancy if that setup doesn't work out in the long run I have another trick for you using 71 era parts that doesn't require drilling out your two wiper shaft holes.
I've got my '62's spare wiper assy apart now working on the conversion with the Volvo motor. I'm just waiting for two new shafts, I thought while it was apart I'd just rebuild the whole works.
Re: 12 volt conversion – Wiper Motor Update
Thanks, Darby, but for now I'm quite happy....my wipers are so much faster and much more steady in their performance. I read extensively on using the '67 two speed units and evidently they are still available but pricey. But your "trick" might be worth sharing just to get it on the record. Please do.

Re: 12 volt conversion – Wiper Motor Update
Any later model motor will work but the column switch years require some clever reworking to get working properly.
The best year I've found was '71 it is a late model motor but still used the two speed dash switch. The tech guys will tell you it will not fot without drilling the wiper shaft holes bigger. All you need to do is cut a new wiper shaft seal in half so you have the inner and outer half (two complete rings) trim them so they are flat and slip one down the shaft before installation of they assy (inner seal), install the assy then slip the outer seal on, washer and nut. You can even use the nice outer plastic nut cover. Use two late model right side wiper arms (they are clearly marked R & L on the face of the arm near the base) unless you want the left one to stand up at an angle like the later cars do. I paint the arms the proper silver and even take the rubber out of the blades to paint the blade holders silver too like they should be. If you use a 71 dash switch you may have to open the hole up and use the 71 nut (polish it 1st) but the original knob & button will work fine. A '67 dash switch or original single speed switch works too. The only think left would be to make a small modification to the upper motor mount under the cowl where there is a small tab and 8mm bolt.

Cool! Thanks, Darby!
