Topic: Name That Part!

Hiya All,

Since everybody had a good time with Dave's turn signal switch (and washing machine parts), I thought I'd throw a few of my old parts out there for your expertise.  These three parts have been knocking around the bottom of my odds & ends box for I don't know how long.  Years easily.  If I ever did know what they were, I sure as heck don't know now.  Anyway, take a look and tell me what you make them to be.  A little description of each is included after the pix..................

The larger object on the left looks like some kind of engine tinware to me, although I can't figure out just what it might be.  The thickness of the metal and its paint (original as far as I can tell) is consistent with engine tin.

The object in the upper right is stamped from very heavy sheet metal.  This may have nothing to with VW at all.  It does have an 8 digit number (14036367) and there is a possibility that it is a 9 digit number.  The last number/letter/figure is not clear and I'm not sure if there was even a number intended there.

The object in the bottom right again reminds me of tinware, specifically the piece that cover the base of the carburetor pre-heat tube.  But it's not that piece.  The metal is a good deal thicker than tinware.  Two captive nuts on either side indicate that this piece was firmly attached to..........................something.

Whaddythink guys?

Re: Name That Part!

Hey Mike,

The part in the top right- wouldn't be a retainer of some sort, would it ?

If you put "14036367 retainer" in your google search, comes up in a website -  automobilearchives.com/parts .
There is a bracket and a baffle on either side of that number in their listing. Doesn't say what it's for tho'.....

I never even thought of googling a part number. I search all the parts sites.

Sorry, googling is cheating!!  Use your own god given computer.
bookwus, had any type 4 engines apart lately? left object looks to be the part that protects the fuel pump on the backside of a carbed engine.bottom right goes between heater box and fan housing on said engine, the other I can't purge up yet so early in the AM.
bring on more. What's the prize for 2 outa 3? LOL

Re: Name That Part!

Hiya Burr,

I have not had any Type4 engines apart - strictly a Type1 kinda guy.  However, I did buy a collection of old Bus parts about ten years ago.  It may well be possible that those parts are from that buy and that they are, indeed, Type4 parts.

Bookwus,
I'd venture to say they have been knocking around in your tool box since that time.
Clancy, you got any links to type 4 engine sheet metal blow-ups?

Burr: Nothing as clean and easy to use as the Type I parts diagrams I've bookmarked. I was going to review my "green" Bentley (Type II and IV) this weekend and see if I could earn myself a plate of cookies....

Re: Name That Part!

I've got the same problem. Bought my '73 in pieces and not all the pieces turned out to be for it. I've got 6 volt stuff, type II and even Rabbit. Apparently Davey-Dumpling has washing machine parts in his stuff. LOL

You could most definitely earn some but collecting seems to be a whole different deal here. LOL
I would like to see if I am on the verge of earning some also (2-- for Yancey)

Re: Name That Part!

Well I'd send you cookies, but B.C. cookies would get you in trouble.

I like this "what is it" stuff to. It sure has helped me identify my stuff which in turn helps others because I gave away some stuff that now I know I'll never need. Like small stuff, knobs and such.

Actually, speaking of unknown parts, I was at a wreckers today picking up some stuff (did well) and the guy there mentioned he had a couple of oil bath cleaners at home for old VW's. One has no preheat setup at all so it must be, what, pre '68? Then he described one with a liquid filled tube that went from the cleaner down to under the tin and closed the flap as the liquid expanded. Is there such a thing? What liquid would expand that much when heated?

Clancy, volkswebbin king of "url"
So did you earn a plate of cookies by looking at your"green" bentley? Am I close to building up my cookie supply? Just curious, as I'm getting woozie from low sugar!!
