Topic: Down Memory Lane!

Jim's photo of his father-in-law inspired me to post some old photos, too. Here are a couple that I dug out of the old shoebox. The first is a view of my Dad's '56 convertible taken in July of 1963, in Wiesbaden, Germany. Note the cool rear view mirror mounted on the left fender. I wish Mom had taken the picture from a little further back so that the whole car could be seen.

The next one was also taken in Wiesbaden in August 1963, when my grandparents came over to Germany to celebrate Grandpa's 74th birthday. The bonus in this picture is the view of the Chrysler and Mercedes in the background. Ah, the memories...... Dad was 42 in those pictures.....Boy, do I feel old!

Re: Down Memory Lane!

Thanks for posting those photos Clancy!

Regarding pic #2...I was about to say that it wasn't in Germany...figuring how many of those Chrysler's could there be in Germany in 1963...but then you mentioned it was Germany.  BTW...do you know who the young person is leaning against the Chrysler?

As far as age...maybe it's just me...but how come 42 in 1963 doesn't look like 42 in 2008?  Not saying your dad looks old for 42 in those pics...just that 42 dosen't look as old as it used to.  Maybe it's the b&w pics.

Re: Down Memory Lane!

Glad you are all enjoying the pics as much as I am. My sister would be embarassed to see that picture (she's the one leaning on the Chrysler).....My Dad worked for General Electric after he retired from the USAF in 1961. That's when we moved to Germany and he bought the 'Vert. He was fluent in German and was responsible for negotiating defense system contracts with Germany and Austria. That's why the Chrysler was shipped over to Germany; the Company paid for it and it was cheaper than buying in Germany. The Mercedes was owned by the neighbor who was also an American. He also had an XKE Jag in his garage which was located off an alley behind the houses. Found out years later that he was a 'spook' with the CIA. < you just never know....except for those of us who "monitor" Jim's work in his garage!>

I know that I have a few more old Bug pictures some place. If (when) I find them, I'll post them.

As for 42 years, well let's just say that as Indiana Jones put it,"It's not the years, it's the miles", and having been a pilot in WWII and an officer who never missed a 'happy hour' at the Officers' Club, well you get my drift. (And Dad was a lot older at 42 than I was at 42!!) Loved that man; miss him dearly and wish he could have seen my VWs over the years! But these pictures sure are fun!
