It doesn't look good if you head-on your Beetle.  The sequence shows 1/2 second from impact to end.  You might survive this but your legs wouldn't

Re: VW Beetle Carsh Test

However, the Beetle did pretty good compared to the Golf if you consider that the Golf had an engine between the barrier and the passenger compartment, and it looks just as bad. Where do you think the engine winds up in that crash?

Re: VW Beetle Carsh Test

I guess you just have to remember from the start the beetle had strict design requirements which ultimately took its toll on safety.
It was desperate times back then.  This was Ralph Nader's big claim is that Vw could have easily made a safer car, but instead continued doing things as they always had to maximize profit & pay huge settlements to cover up accidents.   I would hope this isnt true.  Even if so no matter how safe a car is designed, being small it just cannot argue with the law of physics..lol

Re: VW Beetle Carsh Test

The old beetle doesn't fare any worse in an offset frontal crash than most other cars.

Re: VW Beetle Carsh Test

To demonstrate a Vw's ruggedness , an old German film showed a bug rolled off a cliff and landing on its roof.  After several people roll it back on its wheels its driven away.  I seen it on YOUTUBE if you search the old Vw commercials.
