Topic: looking for vw repair/resto shop near Orillia Ontario

I saw an ad a few months back on thesamba for a resto/repair shop operating in the orillia area. I didnt copy down any of the info, and of course now I cant find the ad any more.

Anyone have any idea of who it might have been?

I'm located in Penetanguishene, Ontario and I'm looking for a reputable shop to do some work on my 74 bug. Orillia isnt really "close" but it was the closest shop I was ever made aware of. Just wish i could find out where it is specifically!

Any help appreciated!

thanks

Penetang!!
Penetang!!

I'm from Penetang!

I thought you were from somewhere near kitchener!

I am the Beausoleil of Beausoleil Motors Ltd--VW dealership in the 60s/70s-- Main street across from the funeral home.

What about European Motors in Midland behind the Radio Shack off Balm Beach road?  He always seems to have VWs around  the shop.

Tottenham has a shop to is that too far--but not sure of the name of the place.

what kind of work are you looking to get done?  I know of a guy in the waterloo area that is absolutely wonderful, but this may be way too far for you....let me know your thoughts

Re: looking for vw repair/resto shop near Orillia Ontario

I went to see the guy in Midland last summer regarding having some front beam adjustments and a tune-up... although he appears to be very knowledgable with vw's old and new, he wasn't the most pleasant person to deal with and basicly told me to get lost.

I think he took particular offence to me because I asked him if I could put synthetic oil in my 74, which he assured me would "blow up" my engine. After that, he basicly said that it was an antique car and that I had better learn to work on it myself or sell it.

I *DO* want to learn but at the moment, busy with work and my newb status as far as technical repairs to vw's goes...  the work that needs to be done on the car just wont get done unless i can find some competent help, or a shop.

The work would be:
Rear wheel bearings (which I planned to do myself but...)
Engine refurbishing (perhaps a rebuild, perhaps just a complete tuneup - valve adjustment, plugs, wires, carb tune, oilchange, etc..)
wheel alignment, and returning the rear end to stock ride height.
Time/money permitting, I'd like to try and track down what is causing an intermittant buzzer sound also.

I'm aware of bugguy in waterloo, but due to the insane noise that the rear wheel is making, i dont trust th car to drive anywhere - so a flatbed will be required and i'd like to keep the cost down as much as possible. From my house to waterloo is about 1-1.5 hrs away. Orillia would be 45 minutes, so...

I'm not even sure where tottenham is?   Off to googlemaps.. will check back here later wink

Thanks though!

(ps. penetang is one of those wierd places that only one in a million people should know about, but i seem to run into that one in a million all the time!!  ...   i once took a bus from ottawa to st catherines, and at random, a guy who got off the same bus asked if i was going to the college (which i was) and said he'd work out a deal.. if i watched his bags while he went to get his truck, he'd give me a lift over there.  so I watched his bags, and he came back with his truck and he drove me to the college... along the way we got to talking.. turns out he grew up in penetang, a few km away from my mothers house... small world!)

You've got that one in a million thing right!
We've run into them all over to--and not for ontario hospital or prison reasons!

Try the owner of our old garage next to the funeral home he may be able to help you or could perhaps tell you of someone.  He's 'old school' and is a great welder in case you need to know.

I saw the owner of that place in Midland once and was hoping he didn't match my impression but I guess he does-pretty gruff huh-too bad.

Without getting too specific where ya from in town.  I grew up on Edward Street.

Re: looking for vw repair/resto shop near Orillia Ontario

yikes aparently the owner/operator of Midland Imports has just had a heart attack?  Although I wasn't too keen on going back there, it was beginning to look like my last hope.

now what...?

sigh!

Re: looking for vw repair/resto shop near Orillia Ontario

Ooo, what a co-incidence!  What now is right!
There is a guy in the midland car club--those guys a the A&W on Sunday nights in the summer--his name is John and he has a 70s bug that he rebuilt.  Maybe you can get a hold of him thru the club and he can help you out.  He knows  me--always bugging me to buy my bug.  My husband and I would often run into him and his wife while having breakfast with the inlaws at Swiss Chalet.  Just thought of him.  Or maybe the guys in the car club can help you out?!

Do NOT use Golden Beetle of Montana for anything, they are a rip off, shoddy work, broken, used rusty parts.  Write me for details.  Be prepared this is not a pretty story.

Re: looking for vw repair/resto shop near Orillia Ontario

Bignic,

I sell auto parts in Aurora an I beleive there are a couple of guys around the newmarket/aurora area that may be able to help.

ECO  Wagens in Newmarket Joesef 905-836-6774
Turner Automotive in Gormely just outside Aurora used to be Hans Motors905-727-8506
also in Holland Landing There is a guy named Gunter has a shop on Toll Rd 905-836-5255

Hope this helps
Steve

Re: looking for vw repair/resto shop near Orillia Ontario

thanks for all the feedback. but i've decided to just bite the bullet and learn to do it all on my own.

that means buying tools and inevitably ordering the wrong parts and blowing stuff up (some of this has already happened!) but 'thems the breaks'.

first up, new starter (seems to be a straight forward install)  and on to wheel bearings, torsion bars, and carb replacement.

wish me luck!
