Topic: Survey

How many feel that registration should be a requirement of posting messages here?

If not, why not?

ref: the nonsense messages posted below (if it hasn't yet been deleted).

Re: Survey

David: I've contacted Darren (web host) to see what his thoughts are on this nuisance. I agree that perhaps disabling the guest login option may help. However, some of our "serious" regulars only come in under that Guest mode. They might have to reconsider "joining" to be able to post.

I know that several boards require an extensive registration procedure including responding to an email generated by the administrator just to see if the person is "real" or at least has a real address.

I, for one, find the nuisances very annoying.

Re: Survey

The spam bots are 'successful' because so many boards have open posting policies.  I run forums using the SMF code, and have not had any issues with bots making guest posts yet (knock wood) except in the guestbook area of the Lunabyte portal I use in conjunction with SMF.  I fixed that by disabling the guestbook.

Registering on a board shouldn't be a big deal if you want to participate on the board.  With anonymous email addresses like gmail, hotmail, yahoo etc, it's not difficult to maintain whatever level of anonomity which some people want.

So yeah, I'd be in favor of requiring registration before posting.

Re: Survey

Normally I am against having too many rules.

Volkswebbin has been a really good forum...and for the most part has been SPAM free...but recently there has been a real "Tital Wave" of Spam!!!

On the positive side the folks posting the Spam usually are putting it in the "General" topics section...which is the most appropriate place for it.

If there is some way to eliminate the Spam without requiring registration great!...but otherwise I would vote for requiring registration in order to post messages.

Of course spammers willing to register (with fake info) would then still be successful posting spam...but I would imagine that registration would certainly cut down on the spam.

Re: Survey

Registering at a site before being able to post is pretty much standard practice anywhere worthwhile I've ever been.  Less anonymity on a board seems to lead to more responsible behavior all around.  I'm all for requiring registration.

Re: Survey

OK, Was hoping not to have to do this, but it looks like the spammers win this round.  I'm now requiring registration for posting.

Sadly, currently air-cooled free.

Re: Survey

yes I do agree it's much better with registration.

Re: Survey

Unfortunately vwtestimonials is a registered user. And seems completely clueless to the fact that he is one of the recent nuisances we have had to contend with.  Fortunately he seems to have given up on this board.

Re: Survey

Sorry guys "and gals", but i don't see the point in being anonymous. Maby I'm just being nieve, but I just dont get it. If any of you folks see me in the real world I would love to chat with ya face to face about bugs or anything else for that matter.

Just my thoughts.

Re: Survey

Steven,

So what's the point of your message???

By the way...I went to your link with the picture of the nice white Beetle...but the link was god aweful slow.  I'm on cable modem...and the download was like being on dialup.

Re: Survey

Bug in My Nose,
Yeah I Know about the link, same thing happened to me yesterday 8/4/06 but seems to be better today. As to my post I was just saying, Take the two minutes to register so we can all know a little more about our new friends. No point really just rattleing.
