In today's world single weight oils are idiotic except for some extreme instances. You'd be MUCH more apt to do engine damage using too thick straight weight oil in a cold snap than taking a trip with 5w30 in a stock (normal operating temps) VW.
I run 5W40 year 'round in Chicago where temps go from -20f to 100f

I Second the  30wt and use Valvoline . Come summer runn 10 /40 valvoline . Im A Bigg fann of Castrol on Japp motors and run Castrol << Even in my bugg,s . But those in Buggy Authority around here claim that valvoline is the only oil for Buggs . There Knowledge Trump,s mine so Valvoline it is. 30 wt in cool weather 10/40 in hot weather 10/30 in winter of really cold climates. Sean
