Topic: best oil for cool Canadian spring

Any Canadian volkswebbers have suggestions about which oil is best (or which oil to avoid) for this time of year.

Insurance on my 74 starts April 1, and you better believe I will be driving.. so I gotta do an oil change this weekend but its still pretty chilly around here in the morning and (since I know nothing of the properties of oil) I need your suggestions as to what might be best for this time of year.

Thanks

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

April 1st,

I have been daily drving 70 type 1 since November in Alberta, and you say chilly. LOL

I cant give my any advice since Iam no oil guru.  I need some help too.  I am still using 5-30.  for the summer should I go to 10-40?  Does not go much higher then 25C here.

I hope some one can help us out.

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

I still like a 5W40 synthetic year around. I use it in all my aircooled and watercooled VWs. (However, since my aircooleds have spin-on filters I only change once/twice a year - so the economics are reasonable.)

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

I dont have a spin on filter.  So Iam still a little conservative with the synthetic, a bit pricy.

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

I run 20w50 year round, but then I'm on the West Coast and the temperatures aren't quite as extreme here.

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

here is what my haynes manual says for oil:

------------Single grade----------Multi grade
60-100F    SAE40          10-90F  SAE20W-50/20W-40
30-90F      SAE30           0-90F   SAE15W-50/15W-40
10-50F      SAE20W-20   -10-40F  SAE10W-40/10W-30
-10-30F     SAE10W        -30-10F  SAE5W-30/5W-20

hope this helps

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

Yeah I used to run 10-30 but i put in 5-30 for winter (sometimes -25C). I heard that is not a good thing to change oil weights, better to stick with one all year around.  Is this true?

Thx

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

Tiger: From my experience, changing oil weights based upon the season in not a bad thing especially if you have significant temperature swings between the seasons. Now if you run 5-30 in the winter I wouldn't suggest adding a quart of 10-30 if you were a quart low...I'd stick with the weight that was in the engine, until you drain it.

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

LOL, yeah I knew that one.  I drive around with a quart and half of 5-30, and a quart of 10-30. (Not combining the two of course)

You should never listen to whoever told you that.  That is bad advice.  It means you are running too thin of oil in the summer, and/or too thick in the winter.  For no reason.

It is also perfectly acceptable to mix viscosities.  For example, if I was a quart low of my 5W-20 right now, I would add 10W-30 since it is now getting warmer.  (if the oil only had 2-3000 km on it)

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

I understand Bruce, if ran out of a perticular weight, I would add the one I have.  In an emergecy.

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

Right.  Better is to add the viscosity that is suitable for the upcoming season.

Re: best oil for cool Canadian spring

Thanks guys!

I had a few friends saying that 5 or 10w30 would be fine, but then talked to a vw import guy who told me to "go ahead and do that if you want your engine to explode if you go on a trip."  he further added that my friends are monkey's and don't know anything about air cooled engines -- I am tempted to agree wink

he reccomended going with SAE 30 and based on woody's post that seems fine, so thats what I'm going to do.
