First.

I have posted before about converting to 8 volts and more or less have been told that I can simply use an 8 volt battery and the current 6 volt generator, along with having the regulator adjusted to pass 9.4 volts.  It has been stated that the 6 volt generator actually puts out over 9.4 volts.  I don't know if this is true but I suspect that if it is, that much voltage is the maximum output only at high engine speed, while at idle or everyday driving speeds (35-40 MPH) the actual output is less.  My question is - would it be possible or advisable to use a 12 volt generator and let the regulator cut it to 9.4 volts?  It seems to me that this would provide the required voltage at lower RPMs.

Second.

I may upgrade to a mild build 1914 DP engine.  I have considered using a small 4-barrel carb rather than spending big bucks on dual Webers or DellOrtos.  Something like an early 50s WCFB.  These pass about 325-350 CFM.  Is that in the range that the VW operates at?  I feel the advantages of this type of carb are: choke, low and high speed circuits, accelerator pump, no synchronization problems, vacuum port for distributor operation.  Question - disadvantages are ???

Re: Opinions wanted

What's wrong with the 6V system?

Everything you need to ask is already answered here

Re: Opinions wanted

Nothing, really.  I'd just like a little more positive starting and brighter headlights without changing everything to 12 volts.

BTW, I've answered my own question about using the 12 volt battery - it won't work because I'd be converting the whole system to 12 volts, requiring the myrid bulb changes, etc.

my second question still stands...
