Re: Brake Adjusting Star Spring Plate Replacement Update

Thanks Clancy - good advice.

Hinge pins - on the older models the top is sealed by a lead plug, painted over. Later models used a plastic cap instead. I'd suggest digging out the lead type and soaking Kroil from the top for a few days. I tried to remove one with the lead in place using:

and the hardened press pin just mushroomed out...
John Henry suggested a pneumatic driver, so I modified one like he suggested and hammered and hammered. Got a tingly hand from it but not much else.

Tom: Thanks for the hinge pin suggestions....yes, I have the original lead plug in my '65. So I guess I'll try digging it out (drill?) Are you thinking that with the lead removed the Eastwood tool will work? I have access to the tool and have used it successfully on later Bug hinges....John Henry and Wolfsburg West both suggest the modified impact hammer, which I will do if I have to. Kroil will probably help the most. That stuff is amazing.

Re: Brake Adjusting Star Spring Plate Replacement Update

I believe removing the lead simply creates a path for the Kroil to enter and free up the top of the pin, where I suspect it fits tightest. Actually the pin I failed with is bound in the hinge (very hard to move the door) - so with a worn hinge that isn't binding I'm sure it's easier. I have the door off, and when I soak the hinge with Kroil and work the hinge back and forth with a 15" Crescent wrench it does free up a lot - but so far not enough to remove the pin. I'll be digging the lead out next to try that - otherwise I may be replacing the hinge. (or the door - the outer skin needs at least partial replacement.)
