Topic: Radio Speaker Impedance?

Re: Radio Speaker Impedance?

Measure it with an ohm meter.  Even if the cone is shot, the magnet should still give you a reading.

Re: Radio Speaker Impedance?

Thanks, Ted. I'll give it a try. But now I'm wondering if the old speaker was correct even 15 years ago. I've done some recent googling on the subject of "speaker impedance matching" and am now wondering if perhaps I should actually be measuring the output of the radio to correctly match it to a new speaker. Any ideas as to how that might be done? Or maybe I shouldn't even worry about it since it's only a 3 inch speaker and a 40 year old radio in a 40 year old car! Thanks, again.

Re: Radio Speaker Impedance?

Due to the high inductive loading of the coil, a simple resistence test doesn't actually measure the effective impedence. Used to be car speakers ranged from 4-16 ohms - so an 8 Ohm is a good option for replacement.

Re: Radio Speaker Impedance?

The correct size speaker for the VW is 5", so if you have a 3" speaker, it wasn't originally intended for the Beetle.  Since it's obvious that the speaker wasn't correct, it's immaterial what its impedence was.  What you need to determine is what the radio requires for a speaker.  There may be markings on the radio itself that give that information.  If not, maybe you could contact someone who deals in antique auto radios (plenty in Hemmings and through Google) who might provide guidance, based on the model number of the radio.

Clancy, Ask at your local Radio Shack. The guys that work there be really helpfull and often know just what is needed for a variety of electronic related questions.

Re: Radio Speaker Impedance?

They should be 8 ohm. We have just found what we believe is a near perfect replacement for type 1 speakers 1958-1969.  We will be testing the first one this week.   We could only get a dozen, as we found them hidden away in an old radio supply. The first four go in our cars, so these won't last long.
