Topic: Suggestions for posting

There seem to be a great deal of newcomers to the VW scene who are posting here, as well as a few old timers in the field.  This is a great mix and we oldtimers are more than willing to provide our expertise to help out one and all with their problems.

I have noted however, a couple of trends that are time consuming and often limit rapid answers.

First,
too many questions are too general to be able to answer without additional information.  The simple question: "I have a miss, what is wrong?" elicits the response "What year is your car?".  Then you come back with: "It's a 1968."  Them we have to ask: "Is it stock?  What carb do you have?  Under what conditions does the miss occur?"   ...and on and on.

Give us the full story in the first question and your answer will be received a lot quicker.

Second,
a lot of questions are piggybacked on unrelated threads.  A thread may be 5-6 answers into a question regarding wheel size with the most recent answer mentioning suspension clearance and someone will interrject a question about a ball joint problem.  While this is a vaid question, it should be posted in its own new thread, otherwise it may not get an answer.

I hope I don't come across as being hard nosed about this; I'm willing to provide the benefit of my knowledge of my 35 year's experience with VWs, but it really helps if you fully, specificaly and accurately describe the problem up front, and post it where it can be seen on the opening screen.

Steven, My agreement about what Dave had said was directed on the content of his post. It was not personally directed at any one member. The members on this website are a decent group of Volkswagen owners who enjoy sharing there passion for there cars and there eagerness to help out anyone with mechanical problems.

Re: Suggestions for posting

I must also clarify and say that my comments were not darected at any one individual.  It was simply my observation over the past year or so about how posts have been made.  We are all here to help one another out.  That goal can best be served only when the problem has been presented fully and consisely.  I also agree with Clancy that obtaining and reading one or two good manuals goes a long way in diagnosing problems.  I could not possibly have finished my car without those referrences.

Re: Suggestions for posting

Yes...I hope no one was offended...and thought that this topic was directed at anyone individually.

I am sure that the "spirit" of the initial post was to mention that if a subject (for example) was posted to discuss Beetle suspensions...that after a couple of days/weeks the subject may have grown to 4 pages with 40 replies, and now through the enthusiasm of conversation we are now discussing engines, or convertible tops, or tires.

The suggestion is once the conversation topic migrates to something other than the original topic (in this theoretical example, suspensions), that a new topic/subject be posted.

This way the new topic gets the proper exposure that it deserves, because the topic name will show up in the "forum topic index" for everyone to see...and thus be able to reply to and solve the issue/question as quickly as possible.

We all know that a lot of our issues/questions usually arise from our latest round of tinkering with our air-cooled volkswagens...and the first thing we want to do is check out "volkswebbin.com" for the answer by posting a question.

Our hope is to get an answer that fixes our problem in as short a time as possible...and by starting a new topic (if there isn't one already started on the same subject), we will insure that we get our answer as quickly as possible.

Thanks,

- Nick

Re: Suggestions for posting

Hey, Darren, is there any way we could talk you into sticking this topic permanently at the top of the page?  Sure would help a lot of folks out around here...

Re: Suggestions for posting

6V: Since you and Darren are both in Vancouver, perhaps you could offer to take him out and buy him a good cup of coffee (or his preferred beverage) and ask him to make this thread a "sticky" post.  If you see him, tell him how much we all appreciate his hosting of this site. I've emailed him on numerous occasions and he has always been prompt and courteous with a reply.

Re: Suggestions for posting

Nice idea, but I think there's a wee bit of a problem.  6v is in Vancouver, Washington while Darren is in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Mind you, it's only a few hours worth of driving between the two!

Re: Suggestions for posting

Above you see a good example of my original second point.

Darren on Nov 7 probably should have contacted the moderator directly
rather than relying on him to perhaps see the comment down a way in
a thread.

Clancy's post on Nov 7 was marginal regarding the original subject.

The three posts following are completely off topic.

I fully realize that it's easy and natural to answer a statement immediately
but really, it should go in a new post.

Perhaps we should have a CHAT category separate from Technical and General.

That way, personal and semi-private comments between two or more posters
wouldn't muddy the subject waters.

OK, I'll shut up now.
