Im trying to find the engine numbers n the type 1 engine i have, all i can find are these numbers 113 129 701 M. anyone know what size year etc engine this is.
In reading the Idiot book i find that this is just a part number, the only other numbers i found were stamped on the gen. they are DE 0101 30211 i cannot find any other numbers on the engine

Re: Engine numbers

Hiya Bugd,

You should be able to locate the engine serial number on the bottom rear face of the generator/alternator pedestal.  It is a number stamped into the metal casting.  It is often covered with gook and grime in a poorly maintained engine.  Might be time to get out the toothbrush and do some scrubbing.

Your engine number (if an engine manufactured after 1965) should be one or two letters followed 6 or 7 digits.  As in AE0558000.

Re: Engine numbers

the ony thing i see on the pedestal is 4,2,3,1, or whatever the firing order is, do i need to remove the pedestal, dont know why I cant find these numbers hmm

Re: Engine numbers

The engine # should be directly below firing order (4,2,3,1) on the gen. pedestal. I have a similar problem. All I can see on mine is the 'F' that indicates it's a 1300. An 'H' indicates a 1500 engine, etc. If you can make out the first letter, in most cases, that's all you need. If the engine has not been replaced, you can get the date of manufacture from the chassis # - found on a plate just behind where the spare tire sits or on the right side of the tunnel under the rear seat. Once you know the date, the engine #'s for that date can be found in a number of places. Does anyone know where there might be another engine # stamped?

Re: Engine numbers

PS: where did you find the 113 129 701 M #? Sounds like a distributor #.  I Think distributor #'s are also indexed as to engine type/year in Bentleys.

Re: Engine numbers

Found it on the intke manifold
cant see anything under the firing order number

Re: Engine numbers

One clarification: except for the 25 & 36 HP engines with the integral generator stand, the engine number is not stamped on the stand itself (with removes from the case), but on the case flange just below the stand. New cases do not have anything stamped there, and some factory replacement engines do not either (I have one that is blank.) If the engine came in a car, it would have an engine number stamped there, a replacement engine may not.

Re: Engine numbers

its not the orig engine, that would explain why i cant find anything
thanks

Re: Engine numbers

Can someone help me ID a VW engine?  The engine number (below the generator pedistal) is 9271286.  I need to find out the year and engine size/hp.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Re: Engine numbers

If it's a Beetle it's a 1200cc engine and the horsepower is 40. The engine was made at the end of 1964.

Re: Engine numbers

Piping in a bit late for the original question...

Some engine rebuilders/remanufacturers would grind off the factory serial number and stamp their own number either on top of the original location, or around on the right side of the same flange.
